The workshop aims to present the results of the research coordinated between FAO RAP and RCSD on the intersections between gender, migration and land tenure, with a focus on local contexts, land rights and culture that shape the experience of migration and land occupation in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (Lao PDR, Myanmar and Thailand).

New research coordinated between FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, and the Regional Centre for Social Sciences and Sustainable Development, Chiang Mai University (RCSD) has examined intersections between gender, migration and land tenure, with a focus on local contexts, land rights and culture that shape the experience of migration and land occupation in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (Lao PDR, Myanmar and Thailand). This research challenges the existing paradigm on land, gender and migration in two ways: First, there have been few studies that have examined migration, gender dimension and generation in agrarian transformation. Even less attention has been paid to the issues of generational differences and land tenure among those who migrate.

Employing a gender-sensitive approach, this research investigates more generally the extent to which secure access to land shapes and is shaped by different women and men’s migration, including from a generational perspective. The research aims to develop a better understanding of the gendered implications on migration and agrarian related issues.
