New focal point joins FAO in Vanuatu

05/08/2016 Port Vila, Vanuatu

FAO is pleased to introduce Graham Nimoho who recently joined the FAO Subregional team as Assistant FAO Representative and who will greatly assist FAO activities on the ground in Vanuatu. In the following brief profile, we find about Graham and why he joined FAO.

Name: Graham Nimoho

Title: Assistant FAO Representative, Vanuatu

Nationality: Republic of Vanuatu

Before joining FAO:  I was employed as the senior fisheries officer for the northern part of Vanuatu by the Vanuatu Fisheries Department (VFD) under the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Bio-Security in 1990. From 1999 to 2016, I was given the managerial role to oversee the development and management of the coastal fisheries in Vanuatu archipelago. The main task was coordinating and monitoring the implementation of fisheries programs in rural communities and focusing more on capture fishery, community-based resource management and rural based fisheries infrastructure developments. I also helped maintain relationships and networks with fisheries collaborating agencies including government agencies, donor partners, local authorities, NGOs and the private sectors.

Areas of interest in FAO: The majority of small island communities with fewer options on rural base cash economic and limited land areas for food security are facing a lot more challenges and risk. The vast majority relies on agriculture farming and the coastal fisheries resources for food security and income generation. I have a particular interest for FAO, through its technical resources and assistance, to raise the level of farming/fishing skills and knowledge for communities. This is not only to increase food production through variable resilient farming/fishing techniques but also to increase women’s participation and skills on food processing and value adding. Also another area of interest is to make food and services accessible to vulnerable groups through appropriate and rural base marketing infrastructures.

Positive aspect of FAO:  FAO has been well recognized for many years through its high-level of technical resources and support towards the national government in realizing its national priorities, mainly in the areas of food security and climate change resilience. I am optimistic that with FAO continuing technical support, especially along the productive sectors will assist the national government in achieving its overall goals such as poverty alleviation, education, health and as well as contribution to the country’s GDP.

Education: Graduated with a Bachelor of Science, degree in Fisheries at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG), Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
