A noble medal to honour HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej

07/06/2006 Thailand

Bangkok - The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is proud to announce that, on the Auspicious Occasion of the 60th Anniversary Celebrations of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s Accession to the Throne, the Agricola Medal bestowed to His Majesty on 6 December 1995 will be re-issued and offered to the public.

The medal, when issued originally in 1995, marked the 50th Anniversary Celebrations of His Majesty’s Accession to the Throne and the 50th Anniversary of the founding of FAO.

Since ascending the Throne, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej has devoted his life to the welfare of the people of Thailand. As the majority of the people depend on agriculture for their living, that is where His Majesty’s major interests and efforts are focussed. His Majesty has developed thousands of projects throughout the country; some financed personally, others supported by the Government. These projects cover diverse areas such as land reclamation, irrigation and water harvesting, fish culture, livestock, horticulture, food processing and food conservation. His Majesty also invented in 2002 an improved technique for inducing rainfall in periods of drought.

When the medal was originally produced, it was offered for sale to the people of Thailand and proved an enormous success, raising funds for further projects.

With this re-issuance, we are offering an opportunity to those who were unable to purchase the medal in 1995 to do so at an especially attractive price.

The medal has on the obverse the portrait of His Majesty the King, armed with a camera and a map, a familiar sight to rural Thai people, whom he visits 7 to 8 months a year. The reverse shows a vision that his subjects have of the Monarch in the field of agriculture: a leader mixing freely with his people, here in typical Thai farmer’s attire. The inscription Sustainable development for a secure future reflects a policy advocated by His Majesty the King.

The medal was designed by Nonthivathn Chandhanaphalin, then Dean of the Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts Faculty, Silpakorn University of Thailand.
