Biodiversity conservation and protected area management course on offer in Fiji

17/08/2017 Suva, Fiji

The Forest and Protected Area Management project (FPAM) is assisting the Fiji Ministry for Forestry Fiji through the Forestry Training Centre (FTC) with the development of a new tailored short term courses for Biodiversity Conservation and Protected Area Management.

The Fiji Forestry Training Centre, which is part of the Ministry of Forests is located on the outskirts of Suva in Fiji. The tailored training targets different types of organizations and groups at all levels: government agencies, non-government organizations, private sector, resource owner organizations, community organizations and community groups and leaders.

The philosophy of the tailored training program is to equip people, organizations and groups with knowledge and skills to better contribute to environmental management in the Pacific Islands. In doing so, it promotes a culture of continuous adult learning that stimulates students to further acquire and use knowledge.

The course then is aimed to enhance skills of people already undertaking related work or that have strong interest in environmental management and biodiversity conservation.

Topics on environmental management and biodiversity conservation include: Biodiversity types and values; participation; practical communication skills; introduction to protected areas; linkages between livelihoods, wellbeing and biodiversity conservation; integrating local knowledge; governance; and climate change.

The course content, duration and location of delivery can be tailored to any client’s specific needs and is envisaged for periods between one to two weeks (including a field-excursion). It is aimed at groups from 12-20 students to allow a dynamic adult learning environment.

The Forestry Training Centre offers training, lodging, and catering facilities to conduct such training as well as a more reclusive ambience conducive for learning, reflection and group discussions.

Establishing conservation areas in the Pacific

The activities are supported by the Global Environment Facility – Pacific Alliance for Sustainability – through the Forest and Protected Area Management project. Its global environmental objective is to strengthen biodiversity conservation and reduce forest land degradation. The FAO/GEF Forestry and Protected Area Management project covers Fiji, Niue, Samoa and Vanuatu.
