José Graziano da Silva speaks about the Zero Hunger Programme in the Asia Pacific Region

The global Zero Hunger Challenge was proposed by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in June 2012. It has five objectives:
1. 100 per cent access to food for all, all year round;
2. end to stunting among children under two because of a lack of nutrients during pregnancy and in the early days of life;
3. ensuring sustainable food systems;
4. doubling smallholder productivity and income; and
5. reduction in food loss, at the farmer level, through lack of suitable storage and reduction of waste of food by retailers and consumers.

On 29 April 2013, the United Nations launched the Zero Hunger Challenge in Asia and the Pacific in the presence of top national leaders, calling on governments, farmers, scientists, business, civil society and consumers to join hands to end hunger in the region where the majority of the world's undernourished people live.

Today’s programme will examine a few aspects of hunger – chronic hunger and malnutrition which remain with us despite repeated promises and commitments for more just societies. We will ask Mr Hiroyuki Konuma, the FAO assistant director-general and regional representative for Asia and the Pacific to explain the present situation and future scenarios.

After decades of relative stability, international food prices escalated in 2007 before dropping and then rising again, most recently in July 2012.

The new environment of high and volatile food prices calls for new measures to protect the food security of the world’s poorest food consumers.

Today, Asia NewsFlash is pleased to have Mr Hiroyuki Konuma, assistant director-general and FAO regional representative for Asia and the Pacific on the show. We will be asking him about the role and impact of market speculation on food prices.

Bo Luangtong of Thai Television Channel 7 explains the future of food security once the coming Asean Economic Community (AEC) is launched at the end of 2015 on her programme "AEC: mai ru, mai dai" ("AEC: Don't know? Should know," which includes an interview with Hiroyuki Konuma, Assistant Director-General of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's Regional Office for Asia and Pacific. Bo explains in Thai, that Mr Konuma agrees the AEC can help improve food security in its member countries in Southeast Asia.
