the Philippines, 03 Jan 2005 -- The Philippine Agricultural Libraries and Information Services Network (PhilAgriNet) was launched during its first General Assembly held in Manila on December 9, 2004.
Dr. Rolando Labios, Chief of the Institutional Development Division of the Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR), delivered the keynote message on behalf of Dr. William C. Medrano, BAR Director. He enjoined the Bureau’s Knowledge Management Division (KMD), Institutional Development Division (IDD), and Information and Communication Technology Division (ICTD) to lend their full support for the development of PhilAgriNet and its database.
Established in 2003, PhilAgriNet aims to create a central electronic database of Philippine technical agricultural literature and to link this with agricultural scientists worldwide. Specifically, it provides an equitable, cooperative, and cost effective manner of sharing information and an enhanced access to print and electronic agricultural knowledge, generated by public and private institutions engaged in agricultural research in the Philippines. The network’s web site features its history, updates, events, member information, and activities.
The winner in the logo contest was announced towards the end of the assembly. The winning entry was submitted by DA-BAR. The Board of Judges consisted of Miss Leonor Gregorio, Mr. Ronald Salunga, Assistant Director for Administration and Finance, Agricultural Training Institute, and Mr. Charlie Calimlim of the Commission on Higher Education, who acted as Chairperson.
The assembly was attended by more than 30 participants representing the various institutional members of the network. Some members have already submitted their inputs to the database. As soon as the server is in place, these will be consolidated to form the PhilAgriNet database. Mr. Ricarte Castro of DA-BAR succeeds Mila Ramos as network coordinator.
