FAO Media Briefing on Asia-Pacific Food Price Index, Cereal Supply and Demand Brief, Save Food Asia-Pacific

Bangkok, Thailand, 04 Sep 2013 -- What:    Media Briefing on FAO’s latest issues of the Food Price Index and the Cereal Supply and Demand Brief. Hiroyuki Konuma, FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific will brief interested media representatives on the Asia-related impacts caused by the cost of food commodities and explain the current cereals situation in region. He and his team of technical experts will answer questions and offer one-on-one interviews with correspondents immediately FOLLOWING the briefing.

The Food Price Index is a measure of the monthly change in international prices of a basket of food commodities. It consists of the average of five commodity group price indices, representing 55 quotations, weighted with the average export shares of each of the groups for 2002-2004.   Cereal Supply and Demand Brief offers a detailed analysis of the availability of cereal crops and current demand for those crops..   The reports will also be accessible through the following URL from 15:00 Thursday, 5 September: http://www.fao.org/index_en.htm

Future events under The Save Food Asia-Pacific Campaign will be outlined at the briefing. These include a brief on the outcomes of the high-level multi-stakeholder consultation and the use of various tools including communication materials – brochures, stickers and videos targeted to a wide audience - and will seek to create platforms such as national and regional multi-stakeholder Save Food Asia-Pacific Networks to advocate against the negative consequences of food losses and food waste in the region, while raising awareness of the importance of saving food.   The campaign is designed to reduce the amount of food that spoils and goes bad from farm to market and also reduce food waste by supermarkets, restaurants, hotels and consumers.

  • Awareness and advocacy are critical for reducing food losses and food waste in Asia and the Pacific Region.
  • The private sector is a key stakeholder and partner in addressing food losses and food waste in Asia and the Pacific region.
  • Support mechanisms must be put in place by governments in order to facilitate smallholder organization and to support private sector initiatives geared toward reducing food losses and food waste.
