Civil society and the Committee on World Food Security

Reform of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) has drawn considerable interest and engagement from CSOs/NGOs in the region during the process of negotiation in 2009 and 2010. Some organizations have participated actively in meetings at the global level and contribute to the work of the civil society members of the Advisory Group to the CFS Bureau as well as providing inputs to proposals for a civil society consultative mechanism.

The opportunity to influence, as participants, government debates on policy and programmes, and contribution to mapping and monitoring progress in attaining food security at national level, are welcomed as results of the reform.

There is hope that changes in CFS will also open the door to similar changes in other FAO Governing Bodies as well as serving as precedent for other inter-governmental bodies.
