Kathmandu, Nepal, 13-17 May 2002
The twenty-sixth FAO Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific was held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 13 to 17 May 2002. Representatives from 25 member countries participated as well as observers from UN member states, international non-governmental organizations, and UN and intergovernmental organizations. His Excellency Sher Bahadur Deuba, Prime Minister of Nepal, delivered the inaugural address.
In conjunction with the conference, representatives of 13 international non-governmental organizations and 19 local non-governmental and civil society organizations participated in the 11 to 12 May 2002 Asia-Pacific civil society regional consultation in preparation for the World Food Summit: five years later. The outcome of the consultation was reported to the plenary session of the FAO conference. The NGO Kathmandu declaration is contained in Appendix F of the report of the conference.
