28th Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific (APRC)

 Jakarta, Indonesia, 15-19 May 2006

The 28th FAO Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific will be held at the Shangri-La Jakarta hotel, in Indonesia from 15 to 19 May 2006. This major biennial event is convened by FAO to review and make recommendations on key food and agricultural issues affecting the Asia-Pacific region.

The conference brings together 46 Asia-Pacific FAO member nations with UN organizations, donors, development partners and civil society. All conference sessions are open to the media.

Discussions will be held on the adjustment and restructuring in major Asian countries and their implications on food security and poverty in the rest of Asia; vulnerability to natural disasters, pesticide management, transboundary animal diseases; and bio-energy.

Conference schedule

The senior officers’ segment of the conference (15 to 17 May) opens at 09:30 hours on 15 May with an opening statement by the Indonesian minister of agriculture. A technical presentation on Avian Influenza will be held on 15 May at 14:30 hours.

The ministerial-level portion of the conference takes place on 18 and 19 May. The inaugural ceremony will start at 09.30 hours on 18 May. FAO director-general Jacques Diouf will deliver a statement that same morning, and meet the media at a press conference later in the afternoon.

A round table will be held at 17:00 hours on 18 May on the effects of trade on food security and poverty alleviation. The adoption of the report of the conference is planned to start at 16:00 hours on 19 May.

Media accreditation and registration

The government of Indonesia will issue media badges needed for admission to the conference venue. Only journalists and media representatives with proper badges can access the plenary meeting hall, press room and other facilities, such as lounges, catering installations and service areas.

In order to facilitate media registration, journalists accredited in Indonesia should send a coloured photograph – identical to the one used in their press accreditation cards – before 14 May – together with their name, nationality, title, name of employer/news organization, and press accreditation card number to:

Media badges have to be picked up in person by presenting a valid press accreditation card at the media registration desk at the Surabaya room, level three in the Shangri-La hotel, starting from 13 May.

Journalists not accredited in Indonesia and interested to attend the regional conference are urged to contact the FAO Conference Information Officer Diderik.deVleeschauwer@fao.org as soon as possible and provide him details of their employer and intended attended at the conference.

Media facilities

A conference press room is provided as a working place for registered journalists only. It is located in the Java room, level one of the Shangri-La hotel. It has computer working stations, a printer, email/Internet facilities as well as a conference information desk.

Journalists can follow the debate in the plenary room from designated rows of chairs for media and news organizations.
