Jakarta, Indonesia, 15-19 May 2006

The 28th session of the FAO Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific was held in Jakarta from 15 to 19 May 2006. Representatives from 30 member countries participated in the Conference. The Independent Chairperson of the FAO Council, observers from United Nations member states, non-member states, international non-governmental organizations and intergovernmental organizations were also in attendance, along with representatives of seven other United Nations organizations.

In the first three days, from 15 to 17 May, senior government officers held in-depth discussions on a range of issues central to food security and rural poverty alleviation in Asia-Pacific countries. This was followed by a two day ministerial segment, from 18 to 19 May, focusing on measures to speed up progress by Asia-Pacific countries towards the November 1996 World Food Summit goal of halving hunger levels by half by the year 2015.

Other items on the agenda were adjustment and restructuring in major Asian economies and their implications on food security and poverty in the rest of the region, reducing vulnerability to natural disasters and promoting a livelihood approach for rehabilitation and reconstruction, the effects of trade on food security and poverty alleviation and making trade work for the poor and hungry, and FAO reform.
