30th Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific (APRC)

Gyeongju, Republic of Korea 27 September - 1 October 2010 

The 30th FAO Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific will be held at Hotel Hyundai in Gyeongju, Republic of Korea from 27 September to 01 October 2010. This major biennial event is convened by FAO to review and make recommendations on key food and agricultural issues affecting the Asia-Pacific region.

The conference brings together 43 Asia-Pacific FAO member nations and a wide range of observers such as representatives of United Nations organizations, donors and other development partners, inter-governmental and international non-governmental organizations. All conference sessions are open to the media.

Participants include ministers of agriculture from the countries in the region, senior government officials, the FAO director-general as well as representatives of civil society and the business sector.

In-depth discussions will be held on a range of issues central to food security and rural poverty alleviation in Asia-Pacific countries such as climate change and food security, dealing with the global food and financial crisis, increasing crop productivity, disasters and the UN programme for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (REDD).

Conference schedule

The senior officers’ segment (SOM) of the conference opens on Monday, 27 September at 09:00 hours with an opening statement by the Korean minister for food, agriculture, forestry and fisheries. The SOM segment will last three days until Wednesday, 29 September.

Also on Wednesday, 29 September a field trip will be held during the morning, and in the afternoon a side event on Enhancing national and regional governance of food security and nutrition: capitalizing on CFS reform will be held from 14:45 to 16:45 hrs, followed by the adoption of the report of the SOM at 17:00 hrs.

The ministerial-level segment of the conference takes place on Thursday, 30 September and Friday, 01 October. The inaugural ceremony will start at 10.00 hours on 30 September. The FAO director-general Jacques Diouf will deliver a statement that same morning, and meet the media at a press conference later in the day.

A Round tableFrom declarations to actions: follow up to L’Aquila Initiative on Food Security and WSFS in the region will be held on Friday morning 01 October.

The adoption of the report of the conference is planned to start at 16:00 hours on Friday 01 October.

Media accreditation and registration

The government will issue media badges needed for admission to the conference venue. Only journalists and media representatives with proper badges can access the plenary meeting hall. Media badges are also needed for access to other facilities, such as lounges, catering installations and service areas (shops, bank, travel agency, etc.), with the exception of those areas exclusively reserved for delegations and the conference secretariat.

In order to facilitate media registration, journalists accredited in the Republic of Korea should send a completed registration form including name, nationality, title, name of employer/news organization, and press accreditation card number soonest and preferably before 17 September.

Note:

During the Inaugural Ceremony on the morning of Thursday, 30 September, access to the Plenary Hall (B1) will be limited to invited guests only. From the Press Room (2F), journalists and media representatives can follow the proceedings in the Plenary Hall through closed circuit television (CCTV).

Media badges have to be picked up in person by presenting a valid press accreditation card at the press registration desk in front of the Convention Hall (B1), starting from 18:30 hrs on Sunday, 26 September to the end of the conference.

Journalists not accredited in the Republic of Korea and interested in attending the regional conference are urged to contact the FAO Conference Information Officer as soon as possible and provide him with details of their employer and intended attendance at the conference.

Media facilities

Working space for registered journalists only is provided at the press room (2F). It has computer working stations, a printer, and email/Internet facilities.

Journalists can follow the debates in the plenary room from designated rows of chairs for media and news organizations.
