Hanoi, Viet Nam, 12 to 16 March 2012
The 31st session of the FAO Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific was held in Hanoi, Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, from 12 to 16 March 2012, hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).
Ministers and senior government officials from 39 FAO member countries attended the meeting. Representatives from international non-governmental organizations, intergovernmental organizations, United Nations organizations, civil society and media also attended by invitation as observers.
During the first three days, from 12 to 14 March, senior government officers hold in-depth discussions on a range of issues central to food security and rural poverty alleviation in Asia-Pacific countries.
The agenda focused, firstly, on regional and global policy and regulatory issues such as the state of food and agriculture in Asia-Pacific, and on two initiatives by the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) - the process to map food security and nutrition actions, and the preparation of the Global Strategic Framework for Food Security and Nutrition, the need for sustainable intensification and diversification of crops towards food and nutrition security, and value chain development and post-harvest loss reduction for small-scale farmers.
Secondly, the conference considered programme and budgetary matters and reviewed proposals for enhancing FAO’s effectiveness and efficiency at country level and make recommendations on the most suitable structure and skills mix of the network of FAO offices in the region.
A side event on Demonstration of mapping tools for country level actions and associated discussions was held on Tuesday 13 March at 14:00 hours.
A joint FAO/MARD press conference was held on Thursday 15 March.
On Friday 16 March, a round table was held on policies to address food price volatility.
In conjunction with the FAO meeting - a wide range of key civil society organizations representing farmers, fisher folk, indigenous people, rural women, cooperatives, NGOs and other civil society organizations met at an Asia-Pacific Regional Civil Society Consultation on 10 and 11 March, hosted by the Viet Nam Farmers Union, at the Khan Quang Do hotel in Hanoi.
