Reintegrating returning migrants for a better tomorrow

FAO strives to maximize the benefits of migration and harness the contributions of migrants to rural livelihoods, while minimizing the negative impacts to household members who stay behind, particularly women and children. In Nepal, FAO is working with local governments to enhance their capacity to support returning migrants, as well as women and youth who remained in their rural areas of origin. As part of these efforts, FAO has trained and supported women in rural communities affected by high male outmigration, improving their employability and entrepreneurial skills. The Organization has also provided vocational training, in-kind support, and continued coaching to Nepalese returning migrants, helping them develop and start their own agribusinesses.

International Day of Forest 2019: Forest and Education

Learning to understand our forests and providing children with a foundation to better understand their importance is a critical step to safeguarding natural resources for future generations. Forests help keep air, soil, water and people healthy and play a vital role in addressing some of the biggest challenges we face today, such as climate change, eliminating hunger and keeping urban and rural communities sustainable. With more than half the world’s population living in urban areas, a number expected to rise to 70 percent by 2050, people are increasingly disconnected from nature and lack the awareness and understanding of forests and their benefits and the need to manage them sustainably, making it essential to bring forests into their lives at an early age.

Rice is one of Asia's most important crops. It sustains lives and livelihoods. As the region's population grows, demand for rice will increase. To meet this future demand in an environmentally and economically sustainable way, a consortium has forged an alliance to find innovative solutions to meet this challenge: the Sustainable Rice Landscapes Initiative. The Initiative is a partnership of FAO, GIZ, IRRI, SRP (Sustainable Rice Platform), UN Environment and WBCSD (World Business Council for Sustainable Development).
