Bangladesh Forest Information System BFIS

Bangladesh Forest Information system or BFIS is a broad-spectrum platform to access data and information about the environment and forests to support sustainable  forest management. It is a web-based system to support information-based strategic planning, implementation and monitoring of multi-objective forest related activities from an integrated platform. The BFIS consists of 20 separate and independent modules and new modules can be added here if necessary.

International Day of Forest 2019: Forest and Education

Learning to understand our forests and providing children with a foundation to better understand their importance is a critical step to safeguarding natural resources for future generations. Forests help keep air, soil, water and people healthy and play a vital role in addressing some of the biggest challenges we face today, such as climate change, eliminating hunger and keeping urban and rural communities sustainable. With more than half the world’s population living in urban areas, a number expected to rise to 70 percent by 2050, people are increasingly disconnected from nature and lack the awareness and understanding of forests and their benefits and the need to manage them sustainably, making it essential to bring forests into their lives at an early age.

Bangkachao District: The Green Lungs of Bangkok

On International Forest Day, March 19, 2019, a group of 50  students from 5 elementary schools in Bangkok went on a boat trip up the river to the Bangkachao area. Known as the lungs of Bangkok and Samutprakarn,  about 48% of its 1,891 hectares of land are covered with vegetation. The students learned about the community cooperative network of land management, land restoration activities, about the importance of trees, forests, soil health and the contribution forests make with oxygen production and carbon sequestration.

Responsible Business Forum 2019, Bangkok - ADG speech

Rice is one of Asia's most important crops. It sustains lives and livelihoods. As the region's population grows, demand for rice will increase. To meet this future demand in an environmentally and economically sustainable way, a consortium has forged an alliance to find innovative solutions to meet this challenge: the Sustainable Rice Landscapes Initiative. The Initiative is a partnership of FAO, GIZ, IRRI, SRP (Sustainable Rice Platform), UN Environment and WBCSD (World Business Council for Sustainable Development). In 2019, the six partners signed a letter of intent on the way forward during the Responsible Business Forum on Food and Agriculture, in Bangkok, Thailand.

FAO Australia Balochistan Agri Business programme (AusABBAII) in Nushki District, Pakistan

The Australia Balochistan Agri Business programme (AusABBAII) is an Australian-Funded, FAO-implemented project in Nushki district, southwestern Balochistan, Pakistan where food insecurity is high, stunting is common and women have a marginalized role. It is working to increase household incomes and food security. Kitchen gardens are producing fruit, vegetables and livestock that is being consumed and some of it is being used for sale or barter. As a result, girls are now being sent to school. Livestock farmers have benefitted from a vaccination programme , fruit tree nurseries have been established and farmers cooperatives are increasing income and reducing waste along the food chain.

FAO's Regional Rice Initiative (RRI) - Lao PDR
