FAO's work on fighting Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing in Asia and the Pacific

IUU fishing is the harvesting of fish or aquatic living resources that contravenes the national, regional, international laws and frameworks that are in place to maintain a sustainable and healthy marine environment and also is associated with human rights infringements, poor labour conditions and criminal activities such as human or drug trafficking. We can eliminate IUU fishing if we work together with effective collaboration, strong partnerships, policy coordination within and across national boundaries, and financial and human resource commitments, backed by solid political will to adopt and implement legal frameworks and tools such as national plans of action, international agreements, traceability schemes and improved fisheries management.

FAO working to improve food safety in Asia and the Pacific - Tonga

Food safety is a priority for all countries – both to protect the health of their citizens and to ensure confidence that food imported and exported is of the highest quality and meets international food safety standards. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has been working with food safety authorities in Tonga, a country that imports much of its food, to help the government develop and implement food safety regulations.
