Objectives
- Provided a multi disciplinary forum for the exchange of the latest scientific information on avian influenza and the role of wild birds.
- Identified the major knowledge gaps for understanding the role of wild bird in the epidemiology of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).
- Assessed the risk of the spread of HPAI by wild birds to currently uninfected areas and risk mitigation measures.
- The main topics were:
- Ecology and virology of the virus
- Surveillance, sampling and Analysis
- Risk Analysis
- The main topics were:
- Migratory routes and disease dynamics
- Human aspects and wild birds
- Wild birds and the risk for humans
- Improvement of tools for disease management.
Organization
- Over 20 invited keynote speakers provided presentations distributed over 5 sessions.
- Each session had a chairman and rapporteur.
- Final conclusions and recommendations were presented for adoption
- The accepted abstracts of the presentations are published in the Proceedings of the Conference.

International Scientific Conference on Avian Influenza and Wild Birds has been organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and OIE - World organisation for animal health. The conference has been funded by the governments of France, The Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland.
