FAO continues to support HPAI control efforts in Viet Nam

03 September 2010 - Outbreaks of H5N1 HPAI in Vietnamese poultry continue. The latest disease event notified by the Department of Animal Health at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Hanoi to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) was on 17 August 2010. A total of six H5N1 HPAI outbreaks were reported, with an apparent mortality rate of over 55 percent. The disease persists in hotspots: the Red River basin and the Mekong delta.

As of 31 August 2010, the cumulative number of confirmed human cases of H5N1 HPAI reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) is 119, of which 59 have resulted in death. So far this year, seven cases have been confirmed topping the totals of 2009 (5 cases) and 2008 (6 cases). Studies have again found a direct link between incidences of H5N1 HPAI in poultry and humans, not infrequently involving bird flock caregivers and bird handlers in markets.

In Southeast Asia, farming systems involving paddy rice production and raising of domestic ducks in plains and river deltas are common practice. These locations form pockets of H5N1 HPAI infection, associated also with risk factors such as high human and chicken densities, weak biosecurity in poultry production, live bird markets and poor hygiene.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) remains active in Viet Nam. FAO’s ongoing programmes deal with H5N1 HPAI as well as other transboundary animal diseases. In most countries in Asia FAO’s field programme support has shifted to transboundary animal diseases and zoonotic disease outbreaks other than H5N1 HPAI.
