Research coordination meeting on early and rapid diagnosis of emerging and transboundary animal diseases

The Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)/Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Division, is holding on 10-14 May 2010, in Rome, Italy, the " Final Research Coordination Meeting on Early and Rapid Diagnosis of Emerging and Transboundary Animal Diseases: Phase 1 - Avian Influenza."

This research coordination meeting is attended by 25 representatives from around the world. Most of the participants are seasoned veterinary laboratory practitioners and diagnostic experts that contribute their knowledge and expertise as the scientific and technical basis for developing or modifying the early and rapid diagnosis of emerging and transboundary diseases, especially of avian influenzas.

The five-day meeting consists of technical presentations, briefings on diagnosis status, finalization of country work plans, and brainstorming sessions. Also, in the first two days, country reports on avian influenza developments are presented for China, Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Niger, Nigeria, Philippines, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Uruguay and Vietnam, to name a few.

The Joint FAO/IAEA Programme on Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture at the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications assists Member Countries of FAO and IAEA to use nuclear techniques and related biotechnologies for developing improved strategies for sustainable food security. The programme accomplishes this by coordinating and supporting research, providing technical and advisory services, providing laboratory support and training, and collecting, analysing and disseminating relevant information and scientific findings.
