The items focus on conferences, workshops, training courses and other events organised by FAO, other UN agencies/bodies and the 15 CGIAR research centres. The events cover all food and agricultural sectors (crops, forestry, fisheries/aquaculture, livestock, agro-industry) and a wide range of biotechnologies (e.g. use of molecular markers, artificial insemination, triploidisation, biofertilisers, micropropagation, genomics, genetic modification etc.). The news and event items on this website are also disseminated through an e-mail newsletter called FAO-BiotechNews that is published in six different versions, one per language i.e. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. The objectives of this training course, organised by the International Center for Living Aquatic Resources (ICLARM), include providing participants with a background to the use of genetic markers as a tool for fisheries resource management and to present the pros and cons of the different genetic techniques that may be used for the assessment of genetic variability.

Every four years, FAO convenes a Session of the International Rice Commission to provide a forum for senior policy makers and senior rice specialists from FAO Member Countries to address issues and constraints, as well as review and orient their national rice research and development programmes. FAO hosts the Secretariat of the Commission. The meeting, whose main theme is "rice for food security", devotes one of its six sessions to "progress in rice genetic improvement for food security", where some papers on rice biotechnology will be presented. Individuals interested in the promotion of sustainable rice production for food security may attend the meeting as observers.

This expert workshop is organised by FAO in co-operation with the University of Tor Vergata and,among other things, it aims to analyse the effects of intellectual property rights (IPRs) on public biotechnology research & development within the food and agricultural sector of developing countries and the policy issues that these raise. Proceedings will be made available in due course. A small number of observers may be permitted to attend.
