The items focus on conferences, workshops, training courses and other events organised by FAO, other UN agencies/bodies and the 15 CGIAR research centres. The events cover all food and agricultural sectors (crops, forestry, fisheries/aquaculture, livestock, agro-industry) and a wide range of biotechnologies (e.g. use of molecular markers, artificial insemination, triploidisation, biofertilisers, micropropagation, genomics, genetic modification etc.). The news and event items on this website are also disseminated through an e-mail newsletter called FAO-BiotechNews that is published in six different versions, one per language i.e. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. A workshop organised by the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in collaboration with the Associação Nacional de Biossegurança (Brazil), the Secretaría de Agricultura, Ganadería, Pesca y Alimentos (Argentina) and the Red Regional de Bioseguridad, Universidad de las Naciones Unidas. The workshop is aimed primarily at people who will be in a position to review applications for the deliberate release of GM crops. Deadline for applications is 31 March 2007.

For this meeting, it is expected that over 180 scientists from around the world will come together to present, discuss and plan activities of the Generation Challenge Programme (GCP). Participation is by invitation only although there are some limited places for others who would like to attend and they can request an invitation. The GCP is one of the Challenge Programmes approved by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), and it "uses molecular biology, genetics, comparative and functional genomics, molecular breeding, physiology and bioinformatics to explore crop diversity for genes of interest and develop a new generation of crops that better withstand the agricultural constraints that more and more resource-poor farmers face".

Organised by the International Rice Research Institute, this training course is targeted at breeders and agronomists working on variety development or cultivar testing, and at research managers with responsibility for rice breeding programs in the public, private and NGO sectors. The course content includes a wide range of topics in rice breeding, including quantitative trait locus analysis and molecular marker-aided selection.

An international academically accredited course that lasts 12 months and is based on a combination of distance-learning and on-campus training sessions. The course is targeted at individuals interested in or engaged as biosafety professionals in government agencies or industry. It is also tailored for individuals with an interest in public policy, legal and ethical aspects of biotechnology. The course, supported though a technical cooperation project under the aegis of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), starts tentatively in August 2007 and 30 April is the deadline for registration.
