The fifth e-mail conference (Conference 5) of the
FAO Electronic Forum on Biotechnology in Food and Agriculture ran from
November 1 to December 17, 2000. The theme of the
conference was: 'Can agricultural biotechnology help to reduce hunger and
increase food security in developing countries ?'. In the Forum so far,
there have been four conferences, dealing with the appropriateness of
currently available biotechnologies for food and agriculture in the crop,
forestry, animal and fishery sectors respectively in developing countries.
One of the factors considered to have an impact on the appropiateness of
agricultural biotechnologies was their potential role in increasing food
security and reducing hunger in developing countries. This topic was raised
in discussions, primarily in Conference 1, so Conference 5 will allow Forum
members to have a more thorough discussion on this subject.
