International workshop, 5-7 March 2005, Turin, Italy: "The role of biotechnology for the characterisation and conservation of crop, forestry, animal and fishery
genetic resources"
As part of the build up to the FAO e-mail conference on biotechnology and genetic resources, an international
workshop entitled "The role of biotechnology for
the characterisation and conservation of crop, forestry, animal and fishery genetic resources" was organised
by FAO, the Fondazione per le Biotecnologie, the ECONOGENE project and the Società Italiana di Genetica Agraria
on 5-7 March 2005 in Turin, Italy.
Presentations were organised into sessions on the status of the world's agricultural biodiversity (Session I); the
use of biotechnology for conservation of genetic resources (Session II); and genetic characterisation of populations
and its use in conservation decision-making (Session IV). There was also a session (nr. III) with presentation of results from
ECONOGENE, a European Union funded project on biodiversity and conservation of sheep and goat
breeds reared in marginal rural areas. Finally, there was a Poster Session.
The proceedings of the workshop, with 20 papers and 37 poster abstracts covering crops, livestock, forestry and fisheries, provide an excellent overview of
the current
status on this subject. The papers and abstracts are provided here in PDF format
