Wednesday 19 June 2013, 13:00-14:30, Iran Room

About the event: The event will be held on 19 June 2013 from 13:00 to 14:30. It will be opened by the Director of FAO’s Plant Production and Protection Division, followed by the Director of Studies, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Algeria; the Advisor to the President and CEO of the International Center for Agricultural Research for Development (CIRAD), France and the Director of the Centre for Scientific and Technical Research arid (CRSTRA) - Biskra, Algeria, and an FAO expert in Ecological Intensification through “Save and Grow”. A round table discussion will be facilitated between panelists and comments from the audience.

Refreshments will be served just prior to the event in front of the Iran Room.

Aims and Topics: To feed a world population growing, there is no other choice but to increase crop yields. But farmers are facing unprecedented pressure. So they have to learn to produce differently to reconcile economic and environmental performance. Agro-ecology is a way to design production systems that rely on the functionality provided by ecosystems. It amplifies natural processes while aiming to reduce pressures on the environment (e.g. reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing the use of pesticides) and to conserve natural resources. This is to make maximum use of nature as a production factor, in sustaining its capacity for renewal. This session will permit reflection and discussion about agro-ecology and how to mobilize its potential.
