IMPACT is a new publication produced by FAO illustrating the Organization’s results and impact worldwide. It shows FAO’s role in connecting the field to national, regional and global initiatives. It demonstrates what FAO has introduced, what it has improved and most of all, what it has left behind in terms of its contribution to food and nutrition security and sustainable natural resource management. IMPACT illustrates how FAO works together with governments, the public and private sector and civil society, to achieve the ultimate aim of eradicating hunger.

Rotterdam Convention: Care for a future without risk. Sharing information on hazardous pesticides in international trade

The Rotterdam Convention, jointly hosted by FAO's Plant Production and Protection Division (AGP) and the UNEP Chemicals Division, covers international trade in certain hazardous chemicals with the aim of protecting human health and the environment. Pesticides represent one major category of traded hazardous chemicals. The Convention contributes to the environmentally sound use of these chemicals, with exchange of information about their characteristics, by providing for a national decision-making process on their import and export and by disseminating these decisions to Parties. The Rotterdam Convention Secretariat is providing technical assistance to countries upon their request, and bringing together all stakeholders. The side event will highlight why this work is so important and give an inside into the activities to reduce the risk from pesticides.

Launch of the book “Lo que la tierra nos da” – Results of the cooperation between FAO, Bolivia and Italy for the conservation of genetic resources

Genetic resources for food and agriculture are vital for all humankind. The Government of Bolivia the Italian Development Cooperation and FAO, have joined efforts to strengthen national policies and public management system of genetic resources. The book “Lo que la tierra nos da” presents the enormous variety of genetic resources for food and agriculture in Bolivia and their strong bond with rural people. The launching of this book is an important step in the promotion of traditional agricultural crops and a relevant activity in relation to the International Year of Quinoa to be celebrated in 2013.
