SO5: Increase the resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises

About the event: Natural and conflict-related disasters disproportionately affect the food insecure rural poor, over 75 percent of whom derive their livelihoods from agriculture, including crops, livestock, fishing and forest related activities. Eradicating hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition is one of FAO’s main goals. Yet, recurrent crises and disasters undermine and often reverse countries’ efforts to achieve this goal. One of FAO’s key priorities, under Strategic Objective 5 (SO5), is to increase the resilience of livelihoods in the face of such threats and crises. People with resilient livelihoods are better able to prevent and reduce the impact of disasters in their lives; and they can better withstand damage, recover and adapt when disasters cannot be prevented.

Purpose: The side event will illustrate few aspects of the achievements under SO5 and how FAO’s work is meaningfully contributing to the efforts made by national authorities, sub-regional and regional bodies in developing, protecting and restoring sustainable livelihoods. In particular, the side event will showcase evidence-based results in the contexts of Guatemala, the Niger, the Philippines and Yemen.
