FAO in Brussels
On 26 November 1991, the European Union (EU) became the 161st Member of the FAO. The accession marked an institutional breakthrough, as it was the first time that the EU became a member of a UN agency, and the first time FAO welcomed a Member Organization.
The FAO Liaison Office in Brussels was officially established with the signing of a Host Country Agreement between FAO and the Kingdom of Belgium in February 1997.
The Liaison Office in Brussels maintains relations and follows the work - policy dialogue, information, exchanges, advocacy - of a broad range of actors from the European Union Institutions, the Belgian Federal and Regional Governments, the Organisation of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (OACPS), FAO's Members Representations and other Brussels-based stakeholders and partners such as NGOs and other UN agencies.
The Liaison Office ensures the work, goals and priorities of the Food and Agriculture Organization are made known, resources are mobilized and partnerships are forged for their advancement.
