Good Practices Case Study Series

The Capacity building Good Practices Case Studies Series is the result of a collaborative Interdepartmental effort to document FAO good practices in capacity building in FAO's areas of expertise. This is to inform the corporate strategy development on capacity building and to provide the basis to design enhanced interventions for the future.

The understanding of good practices in capacity building is still an evolving ground; however we attempted to define them in relation to (i) country desired changes that indicate progress towards large scale goals and (ii) to the critical factors which guide the relationship between a competent organisation such as FAO and the willingness of national institution(s) or actors) to be part of a capacity development process.

Across the cases, the terms capacity building and capacity development have been used as synonyms and refer to various forms of strategic support provided to countries aiming at strengthening existing capacities and assets across three overlapping and interconnected layers - individual, institutional, policy. In addition, the terms 'intervention' as well as 'modality' are used in technical sense. The first refers to an overall process, method or approach used by FAO to enhance country capacities. The latter details the typologies of support provided (e.g. conference, seminar, workshop, formal training, study-tours etc.). An initial round of case studies has been completed; however more cases will be identified and added to this site.

For a description of each of the success factors see:
