Principal External Resources on Capacity Development

Capacity development has been accorded a high priority within the UN and the broader international community. This section of the portal presents the principal external resources available on Capacity development.

The resources listed in this section are varied, and can be classified as initiatives, Communities of Practice, website portals, among others.  It is our intention to offer a selection of prominent resources from which to derive a greater understanding of the valuable work being carried out internationally in the area of Capacity development.

Africa's Capacity Development Strategic Framework - this joint publication between the African Union and NEPAD is an outcome of three years of concerted efforts, dedication and investment in a participatory process that sought to define and articulate the capacity needs and solutions for Africa. Published in July 2012. English only.

African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) - The main aim of ACBF is to build sustainable human and institutional capacity for growth, poverty reduction and good governance in Africa.  ACBF’s mandate in capacity building is defined by its constitution that was adopted by its stakeholders on 9 February 1991.  This website is available in English only. - A gateway for CD - Welcome to, a resource portal for the practice of capacity development and the home of journal, published three times a year. Building on the topics covered in the journal, this website aims to facilitate access to a broad range of related online resources that practitioners can draw on for their own work.

Capacity Development Network (Capacity-Net) - Capacity-Net provides a platform for development practitioners and experts interested in exchanging resources and experiences, and discussing key issues in capacity development. This website is available in English only.

Development Cooperation Directorate - Our work on capacity development draws on best practice to establish common principles and works with DCD's various teams to ensure that capacity building is integrated as effectively as possible in development programmes. This website is available in English only.

European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM) - ECDPM help countries in Europe, Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific (ACP) build effective partnerships that will tackle these and other development challenges.

Learning Network on Capacity Development (LenCD) - The Learning Network on Capacity Development (LenCD) is an informal network of analysts and practitioners aimed at creating a global community of practice around capacity development. This website is available in English only.

UNDP Capacity Development - UNDP is working in 166 countries to help develop the capacities required to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Capacity is the ability of individuals, institutions and societies to perform functions, solve problems, and set and achieve objectives in a sustainable manner. Capacity Development (CD) is thereby the process through which individuals, organisations and societies obtain, strengthen and maintain the capabilities to set and achieve their own development objectives over time.

World Bank Institute: Capacity Development and Results - Connects sources of knowledge and develops and shares innovative tools and resources to advance results-focused capacity development programs and strategies.
