Explore on-farm. On-farm trials for adapting and adopting good agricultural practices

Rome, 2003, 92 pp.
ISBN 92-5-105078-3
TC/M/Y5146/E
$43.00

Explore On-farm aims at improving sustainable production of rainfed wheat-based farming systems. It brings researchers, farmers and extension agents together, on-farm, to carry out guided and collaborative crop trials. The trials should lead to the identification and reduction of constraints to productivity and to the adaptation of general recommendations to local conditions. These guidelines work upon: increasing understanding of the local environment and how it, the crop and other yield-determining factors interact; improving management of cropping systems and thus, sustainable yield; and increasing crop diversification. They are not a set of static rules; on the contrary, they encourage modifications in order to address local needs and circumstances after a cycle of learning, thought and discussion among all collaborators.

A permanent FAO working group, composed of scientists from the coastal states and from countries or organizations that play an active role in northwest African pelagic fisheries, was established in March 2001. The main objective of the working group is to propose options for stock management and exploitation of their fisheries and provide catch advice for each year, as well as to improve the assessment of the small pelagic resources for the economic benefit of Morocco, Mauritania, the Gambia and Senegal and ensure optimal sustainability of the resources. At its last meeting, the working group recommended that the catch levels of small pelagics should not exceed the average recorded during the last five years. For sardinella, it recommended that the combined catch of both species in 2004 should not exceed the mean level of the preceding three years, i.e. 420 000 tonnes.

Poverty mapping in developing countries has become an important tool in identifying ways to improve living standards. The most commonly methods used until now to generate poverty maps have drawn on models who do not take into account the spatial dependence that may exist in human societies with regard to income distribution. In this report, the authors use spatial regression to model more accurately the distribution of poverty across regions in Ecuador. Although the geographic focus of this paper is in Ecuador, its major contribution is methodological.

Know to move, move to know. Ecological knowledge and herd movement strategies among the Wodaabe of Southeastern Niger

The present case study sets out the vital role that local knowledge plays in conserving biodiversity and ecosystems function in semi-arid rangelands. This study describes in detail the activities of the Wodaabe nomads, who strive to promote the prosperity of their herds through pastoral mobility and labour. The latter comprises many tasks such as driving animals to graze, watering animals at wells, feeding them minerals, searching for pastures. The relationship between the herder, his red Zebu cattle and the bush land is marked on the one hand by cultural values such as the endeavour to leave the herd in good shape to his descendants; and on the other hand by Sahelian economic life in which the Wodaabe work to maximise herd fertility in order to gain animal wealth for market exchange and milk for household consumption.
