Guidelines on minimum requirements for agricultural pesticide application equipment. Volume Four. Ground-based locust and grasshopper sprayers
Rome, 2004, 34 pp. The FAO minimum requirements in this publication are based onas existing international, European and national standards and other published references. They also draw on the in-depth knowledge and experience of international sprayer standards of the experts assigned to the project and on the authors' experience of pesticide application in the developing world. They take into account sprayers that are already on the market, many of which already meet the requirements. The guidelines on minimum requirements provide a practical aid to assist purchasing and other agencies to avoid buying or approving sprayers with quality and design limitations, which could compromise operator and environmental safety. Member countries should adopt them immediately, to begin to eliminate substandard and unsafe sprayers from national markets and ultimately from the international scene.

Part I - Residues, FAO Plant Production and Protection Paper No. 177, ISBN 92-5-105176-3] The annual Joint meeting of the FAO Panel of Experts on Pesticide Residues in Food and the Environment and WHO Core Assessment Group on Pesticide Residues (JMPR) was held in Geneva, Switzerland, from15 to 24 September 2004. These evaluations contain monographs on the pesticides and include comments on analytical methods. The recommendations of the joint meeting, including further research and information, are proposed for use by Member Governments of the respective agencies and other interested parties.

Towards effective and sustainable seed relief activities
Edited by: Louise Sperling, Thomas Osborn, David Cooper The workshop Effective and Sustainable Seed Relief Activities was held at FAO headquarters, Rome, 26-28 May, 2003. The aim of the workshop was to improve the effectiveness of seed relief interventions and the contribution they can make to sustainable improvements in seed, food and livelihood security. The workshop brought together over 70 stakeholders from FAO, relief agencies, donors, technical organizations and emergency-prone countries to exchange lessons learned in the area of seed relief, to identify gaps and needs in the development of tools, guidance and methodologies, and to agree on recommendations for further collaborative work.

FAO Fisheries Report No. 735, Supplement The session agreed on a vision statement and on a characterization of small-scale fisheries as well as on a research agenda of five main themes. It elaborated preliminary drafts of two separate technical documents on the contribution, role and importance of small-scale fisheries and research agenda for small-scale fisheries and requested that the documents be submitted, after finalization by the Secretariat, to the ACFR at its next session.

Hatchery culture of bivalves. A practical manual

It encompasses both the similarities and differences in approach in rearing clams, oysters and scallops in different climatic zones. All aspects of the culture process are described, together with basic considerations in choosing a site for hatchery development and in the design of a suitable facility. It also includes the post-hatchery handling of larvae in remote setting and also of spat in both land- and sea-based nurseries. This document is intended to assist both technicians entering the field as well as entrepreneurs researching investment opportunities in bivalve culture.

Survey reports of the R/V DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN 1975-89
Rome, 2004 The research vessel DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN operated for 18 years (1975 to 1993), surveying shelves and slopes of tropical and subtropical regions. The main objective was to provide developing countries with relevant information on their fishery resources, including distribution and biomass estimates that could be used for estimating stock potentials. The vessel was funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), the United Nations Development Programme (UNEP) and operated through a cooperation between the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) and FAO. This CD-ROM contains the various reports of the survey carried out in the period from 1975 to 1989. It also contains the FAO Fisheries Technical Paper No. 391, The DR. FRIDTJOF NANSENProgramme 1975-1993. Investigations of fishery resources in developing regions. History of the programme and review of results. |

World Fisheries and Aquaculture Atlas CD ROM - 3rd edition
Rome, 2004 Fisheries and related industries provide a livelihood for as many as 140 million people worldwide. Vital to the poorest, fisheries contributes significantly to world food security and account for over US$50 billion in international trade. Based on the broad board of expertise of the FAO Fisheries Department, the World Fisheries and Aquaculture Atlas CD-ROM presents a comprehensive and global view of both capture fisheries and aquaculture. The World fisheries and aquaculture Atlas CD-ROM will be updated and published every two years. Future editions will include other language versions. |

Carbon sequestration in dryland soils
World Soil Resources Report No. 102 This publication is part of FAO's work on soil carbon sequestration within the framework of its programme on the integrated planning and management of land resources for sustainable rural development. The report presents a comprehensive analysis of the scientific aspects and potentiality of carbon sequestration in drylands on the basis of case studies across different land use and management systems carried out in several distinctive drylands areas of the world. It includes an overview of the policies and clarification of the different economic incentives regarding soil carbon sequestration in order to determine how available resources and specific programmes can be implemented in drylands in order to improve food security and rural livelihood of the populations in drylands, one of the most soil degraded and impoverished regions of the world.

FAO Irrigation and Drainage Paper No. 56 This publication presents an updated procedure for calculating reference and crop evapotranspiration from meteorological data and crop coefficients. The procedure, first presented in FAO Irrigation and Drainage Paper No. 24, Crop water requirements, in 1977, allows estimation of the amount of water used by a crop, taking into account the effect of the climate and the crop characteristics. The publication incorporates advances in research and more accurate procedures for determining crop water use as recommended by a panel of high-level experts organized by FAO in May 1990. The first part of the guidelines includes procedures for determining reference crop evapotranspiration according to the FAO Penman-Monteith method. These are followed by updated procedures for estimating the evapotranspiration of different crops for different growth stages and ecological conditions.

Water charging in irrigated agriculture. An analysis of international experience

Burke During the last decade, the concept of water demand management has received increasing attention from both academics and development agencies and banks. In the face of rising costs for supply augmentation and concerns over the apparently inefficient use of water in agriculture, managing demand appears a priority means of mitigating water scarcity problems. Economists, in particular, have used theoretical frameworks to argue for the use of "economic instruments" to provide incentives that may lead to water saving or enhancing economic efficiency. However, it has become increasingly clear to many practitioners and researchers that evidence from the field shows that the impact of economic tools has fallen short of expectations and promises. Based on an extensive review of the literature and six commissioned case studies, this document demonstrates that there are few examples in which the introduction of water pricing in irrigation schemes has successfully induced water savings. It also shows that there is often confusion over the different justifications for water pricing.

Even a small plot of land, if well managed, can make a substantial contribution towards meeting household food needs and improving nutrition. Voluntary standards and certification for environmentally and socially responsible agricultural production and trade
By: Pascal Liu, Mikkel Andersen, Catherine Pazderka This publication is a summary of the presentations and discussions that took place during the meeting on Voluntary Standards and Certification for Responsible Agricultural Production and Trade organized by FAO in April 2004. It presents the situation of the main import markets for certified products and the evolution of demand. Case studies aimed at comparing sustainable farming methods with conventional methods are presented. These comparisons focus on production cost, yield, price premium and net profit. The difficulties with which the producers are confronted are analysed and possible solutions to overcome them are explored. The publication also discusses the roles of nongovernmental organizations, private stakeholders and other institutions involved in sustainable agriculture and explores possibilities for greater collaboration among them.
