Grasslands: Developments, opportunities, perspectives

By: S.G. Reynolds and J. Frame
Enfield (NH, USA), 2005, 556 pp.
ISBN 92-5-105042-2
TC/M/Y5070/E
$74.00

This book looks at significant current grassland problems and issues, and provides an insight into grassland productivity in diverse areas of the world, with their various production systems. There is a focus on recent technical advances and the prospects for further innovation, through twenty-one chapters by eminent grassland scientists, grouped into seven sections - forage germplasm; forage conservation; grass-based systems and organic production; climate change, biodiversity and biotechnology; geographical information systems; farmer and pastoralist participation; and regional developments. The book is timely in view of the expanding human and livestock populations, especially in arid and semi-arid environments, with the consequent pressure on the world's grasslands. Researchers, lecturers and students in grassland science and its associated disciplines will find the texts and references a valuable resource in their work. Land use advisers and policy-makers should find stimulus for new ideas in the debate on the future role of grasslands in feeding the Earth's population.

Microfinance and forest-based small-scale enterprises

FAO Forestry Paper No. 146
Rome, 2005, 148 pp.
ISBN 92-5-105412-6
ISSN 0258-6150
TC/M/A0226/E
$20.00

Communities around the world rely on forests for their livelihoods, not only for domestic uses but also for income, frequently obtained through small-scale, often family-run enterprises. The sustainable development of such enterprises is increasingly recognized as a key to poverty reduction but is often hindered by lack of financial inputs or poor access to microfinance services. This publication reviews the specific microfinance needs of small-scale enterprises given the often seasonal and unpredictable nature of forest-based activities. It analyses the constraints they face when trying to obtain microfinance services and identifies ways to overcome these challenges. The publication examines the role that different types of microfinance institutions, such as banks, non-governmental organizations, cooperatives and credit unions, can play for small-scale enterprises and forest communities. It discusses, in addition to microcredit, a comprehensive range of services including savings, group lending, leasing, insurance and cash transfers. The strengths and weaknesses of different approaches are illustrated through four case studies in Nepal, Guatemala, the Sudan and Peru. This book will be a useful reference for those involved in designing policies and projects for the development of forest communities, as well as for those providing financial services to small enterprises in rural areas.

Interactions between aquaculture and capture fisheries: a methodological perspective

Edited by: Stefano Cataudella, Fabio Massa, Donatella Crosetti
General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) Studies and Reviews No. 78
Rome, 2005, 244 pp.
ISBN 92-5-105378-2
ISSN 1020-9549
TR/M/A0141/E
$36.00

The principal objective of the FAO AdriaMed Expert Consultation "Interactions between Aquaculture and Capture Fisheries" (Rome, 5-7 November 2003) was to explore the main issues dealing with interactions between aquaculture and capture fisheries by using the existing knowledge available at the Adriatic basin level. This initiative would represent a contribution at subregional level towards the establishment and implementation of the principles of the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries concerning aquaculture activities. A preliminary matrix for the identification of indicators emerged and was drafted from comments made by the experts from the Adriatic present at the meeting. This matrix represents a first step towards the definition of a set of indicators to monitor the relationship between aquaculture and capture fisheries in the Adriatic Region following the criteria for sustainability. Moreover, the expert consultation adopted a series of recommendations that could be directed to the Adriatic countries underlining that positive and negative interactions between aquaculture and capture fisheries must be considered in the context of integrated coastal zone management.

Increasing the contribution of small-scale fisheries to poverty alleviation and food security

FAO Technical Guidelines for Responsible Fisheries No. 10
Rome, 2005, 96 pp.
ISBN 92-5-105418-5
ISSN 1020-5292
TC/M/A0237/E
$14.00

Most small-scale fishers are in developing countries and many live in poor and food insecure communities. The guidelines explore ways through which the contribution of small-scale fisheries to poverty alleviation and food security could be enhanced. A vision for the future of small-scale fisheries is presented as a goal towards which the subsector should develop. Ensuring greater participation by small-scale fishers and their communities in the formulation of policies, the development of related legislation and regulations, and in management decision-making and implementation processes, is vital to the realization of this vision. The central role of effective fisheries management, the importance of considering cross-sectoral uses of fisheries and related resources, the special role of women in fish marketing, processing and value addition, the significant scope for trade, the critical role that adequate financing can have in enabling transitions for effective fisheries management and the role of knowledge in making informed decisions are all discussed in these guidelines.

Although the principles of an ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF) are not new, there is very little practical experience in their implementation. Translating high-level policy goals on EAF into operational objectives and actions is now the key challenge to sustainable fisheries. This booklet will provide and overview of EAF, for marine capture fisheries, and its benefits; consider what is required to implement EAF; consider the range of management measures available; provide an overview of the management process; outline any outstanding research requirements; and list the main threats to the implementation of EAF.

The general objective of the Planning Group is to plan the coordination of acoustic surveys in the region including intercalibration of research vessels and to act as a forum. The Planning Group noted that the three countries that possess their own research vessels` had all conducted acoustic surveys in 2003 and that progress had been made in terms of planning and implementation of surveys as well as in data analysis and reporting. Nevertheless, there are still some issues that need to be addressed including the coordination of the national surveys to ensure complete coverage of the pelagic stocks, studies to reduce the noise level of the different research vessels, and the operation of the pelagic trawl to improve sampling of the target pelagic species.

Responsible fish trade and food security

By: John Kurien
FAO Fisheries Technical Paper No. 456
Rome, 2005, 116 pp.
ISBN 92-5-105376-6
ISSN 0429-9345
TC/M/A0143/E

This report focuses primarily on the direct and indirect influences of fish trade and food security. It reviews in detail the positive and negative impacts of international fish trade on food security in low-income food-deficit countries. The main findings are that this trade has had a positive effect on food security, both through higher availability of fish for human consumption in developing countries and through higher income generated through trade. The report cautions, however, that sustainable resource management practices are a necessary condition for sustainable international trade. It also highlights the need for free and transparent trade and market policies to ensure that benefits from international trade are enjoyed by all segments of society.

The complexity and intensity of human use of coastal ecosystems represent a challenge to earth observations. This document presents the strategy developed by a panel of scientific experts to establish a Coastal Module of the Global Terrestrial Observing System (C-GTOS) to meet this challenge. The primary goal of C-GTOS is to detect, assess and predict global and large-scale regional change associated with land-based, wetland and freshwater ecosystems along the coast. The first sections of the document describe the design for a mature observing system and integration with other systems, contributing to global management programmes, political instruments and research activities. In the sections following, details are provided on the five products that implement this strategy during the initial phase of the programme and a discussion of milestones for development of a mature system are also described.

Violent conflicts typically result in the displacement of much of the population. At the end of the conflict there may be several competing, legitimate claims to the same land as a result of successive waves of displacement. This guide has been prepared to assist land tenure and land administration specialists who are involved with the reconstruction of systems of land tenure and land administration in countries that are emerging from violent conflict. The guide identifies key aspects that should be analysed during initial assessments, and gives examples of short-term actions that may be implemented relatively quickly. It presents policy considerations for the restitution of land to rightful claimants and the resettlement of people who are landless or who cannot return to their home.

Farming freshwater prawns. A manual for the culture of giant river prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii)

By: Michael B. New
FAO Fisheries Technical Paper No. 428
Rome, 2005, 226 pp.
ISBN 92-5-504811-2
ISSN 1728-7332
TC/M/Y4100/Ch
$50.00

This manual is an up-to-date practical guide to the farming of Macrobrachium rosenbergii. Many of the techniques described are also applicable to the culture of other species of freshwater prawns. The principle target audience is farmers and extension workers but it is also hoped that it will be useful for aquaculture lecturers and students. After a preliminary section on the biology of freshwater prawns, the manual covers site selection for hatcheries, nurseries and grow-out facilities, and the management of the broodstock, hatchery, nursery and grow-out phases of rearing. Harvesting and post-harvest handling are also covered and there are some notes on marketing freshwater prawns. The reference and bibliography section contains a list of relevant reviews, as well as other manuals on general aquaculture themes, such as water and soil management, topography, pond construction and simple economics. The management principles described are illustrated by photographs and drawings.
