This report is FAO's latest assessment of the long-term outlook for the world's food supplies, nutrition and agriculture. It presents the projections and the main messages. The projections cover supply and demand for the major agricultural commodities and sectors, including fisheries and forestry. This analysis forms the basis for a more detailed examination of other factors, such as nutrition and undernourishment, and the implications for international trade. The report also investigates the implications of future supply and demand for the natural resource base and discusses how technology can contribute to more sustainable development. One of the report's main findings is that, if no corrective action is taken, the target set by the World Food Summit in 1996 (that of halving the number of undernourished people by 2015) is not going to be met. Nothing short of a massive effort at improving the overall development performance will free the developing world of its most pressing food insecurity problems. The progress made towards this target depends on many factors, not least of which are political will and the mobilization of additional resources. Past experience underlines the crucial role of agriculture in the development process, particularly where the majority of the population still depends on this sector for employment and income.

Classification, origin, diffusion and history of the olive

Rome, 2002, 86 pp.
ISBN 92-5-104831-2
TC/M/Y4202/E
$30.00

Today the olive is grown in areas with a Mediterranean climate and is, in many cases, of interest in countries that do not have strong economies and whose scientific activity and influence is thus limited. As a result, despite the fact that the plant has been the object of studies over millennia, there are still many aspects of its development that have not been sufficiently explored, and these include the distribution of the species and its taxonomy. This document presents a focused review of such topics in order to provide a foundation for those who may wish to contribute further to the generation of knowledge about this plant.

Manual on development and use of FAO and WHO specifications for pesticides. First edition. Pesticide specifications

FAO Plant Production and Protection Paper No. 173
Rome, 2002, 272 pp.
ISBN 92-5-104857-6
ISSN 0259-2517
TC/M/Y4353/E
$30.00

In 2001, FAO and WHO agreed to develop specifications for pesticides jointly, thus providing unique, robust and universally applicable standards for pesticide quality. The Manual on development and use of FAO and WHO specifications for pesticides is the first publication of this joint programme and supersedes all previous manuals and guidance documents published by either FAO or WHO on this subject. It provides the standard process, unified requirements and procedures, harmonized definitions and nomenclature, technical guidelines and standards applicable to pesticides for use in agriculture and public health. FAO/WHO specifications apply only to the products of manufacturers whose technical materials have been evaluated. The specifications may be used to provide an international point of reference against which the quality of products can be judged, either for regulatory purposes or in commercial dealings, thereby helping to prevent the trade, sale and use of inferior quality pesticide products. Thus the specifications will enhance confidence in the purchase and use of pesticides and, at the same time contribute towards better pest control, sound agricultural production, effective vector control measures and improved user, public and environmental safety throughout the world, especially in developing countries.

The annual Joint Meeting of the FAO Panel of Experts on Pesticide Residues in Food and the Environment and the Who Core Assessment Group on Pesticide Residues was held in Rome from 16 to 25 September 2002. The meeting was held in pursuance of recommendations made by previous meetings and accepted by the governing bodies of FAO and WHO that studies should be undertaken jointly by experts to evaluate possible hazards to humans arising from the occurrence of pesticide residues in foods. During the meeting the FAO Panel of Experts was responsible for reviewing pesticide use patterns (good agricultural practices), data on the chemistry and composition of the pesticides, and methods of analysis for pesticide residues as well as for estimating the maximum residue levels that might occur as a result of the use of pesticides according to good agricultural practices. The WHO Toxicological Core Assessment Group was responsible for reviewing toxicological and related data and for estimating, where possible, acceptable daily intakes (ADIs) of the pesticides for humans. This report contains information on ADIs, maximum residue levels and general principles for the evaluation of pesticides. The supporting documents (on residues and toxicological evaluations) contain detailed monographs on these pesticides and include comments on analytical methods. The recommendations of the joint meeting, including further research and information, are proposed for use by Member Governments of the respective agencies and other interested parties.

Contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP) represents a major obstacle to cattle production in Africa and elsewhere. The disease appeared to be under control but made a spectacular comeback about a decade ago affecting areas previously known to be free from infection and disease. The effect of CBPP on cattle population in newly affected areas is devastating. Chronically affected areas suffer from decreased cattle productivity and lingering deaths. The purpose of this manual is to provide guidelines and easy reference source for countries to evolve their own national planning policies, strategies and control options in dealing with outbreaks of CBPP.

Trees outside forests. Towards better awareness

FAO Conservation Guide No. 35

Trees outside forests, together with forests and other woodlands, play an essential role in solving important problems of rural and urban populations. They contribute to the structure of the landscape, generate numerous environmental and social services, and yield important food products for the people and for meeting other domestic needs. People, however, are not fully benefiting from these important roles, because trees outside forests are neither well perceived nor well documented, and receive little attention in the formulation of national forestry policy and planning. This document is a product of important synthesis work and collaboration, and an attempt to fill in the gaps. It presents the concept and role of trees outside forests, analyses the problems and challenges, and outline the path of thinking and action towards a better and more complete consideration of the resources and their integration in territorial management policies.

Cold water fisheries in the trans-Himalayan countries

ISBN 92-5-104807-X
ISSN 0429-9345

The trans-Himalayan region encompasses a number of countries situated in the midland and highland areas of the Himalayas, Karakoram and, in a broad sense also, in Hindu Kush and Pamir. The mountains are characterized by a very low level of human development, with full exploitation or overexploitation of the natural resources. Fisheries play an important role in providing food and income to the mountain people. This volume contains contributions presented at a Symposium on Cold Water Fishes of the Trans-Himalayan Region, held in July 2001 in Nepal. The Symposium reviewed information, experiences, ideas and findings related to fish and fisheries in the region. Special attention was given to fish species distribution, fishing intensity, socio-economic conditions and livelihoods of fisher communities, as well as to the impacts of environment degradation, conservation measures and aquaculture technologies on indigenous and exotic cold water fish. The Symposium highlighted the role of fisheries in providing food and income to people within the trans-Himalayas and Karakoram. Recognizing the need to increase the role of aquatic resources in poverty alleviation, the Symposium urged national governments to give greater attention to fisheries development in mountain areas.

Women constitute a large portion of the economically active population engaged in agriculture. International instruments on human rights, the environment and sustainable development reaffirm the principle of non-discrimination on the basis of sex or gender. Yet women often face gendered obstacles in realizing their rights and feeding their families. This study analyses the gender dimension of agriculture-related legislation in a selection of different countries around the world, examining the legal status of women in three key areas: rights to land and other natural resources; rights of women agricultural workers; and rights concerning women’s agricultural self-employment activities, ranging from women’s status in rural cooperatives to their access to credit, training and extension services.

The information in this booklet is designed to assist governments and civil society in understanding how agricultural leasing and related agreements work, and what the advantages are of providing an appropriate framework for equitable arrangements that balance the interests of the parties involved - generally the tenant and the landowner. The guidelines therefore deal with the contextual and policy issues surrounding agricultural leasing, but also focus on providing a practical and up-to-date guide and commentary on those issues that need to be considered by both landlord and tenant when negotiating over the leasing of agricultural land.
