Edited by: Kakoli Gosh, Paul C. Jepson The main objective of this consultation was to review the scientific basis and procedures to establish effective post-release monitoring of genetically modified (GM) crops and develop guidelines to strengthen the capacities of member countries to design and carry out monitoring programmes. The major outputs of the meeting were: a review of scientific criteria and procedures that address the technical aspects of monitoring environmental effects of GM crops; two strategies that could be used as the basis for efficient monitoring programmes; and recommendations for scientists managing the monitoring process, policy and decision-makers, FAO and other relevant international agencies.

Pesticides residues in food 2006. Joint FAO/WHO Meeting on Pesticide Residues. Report 2006
FAO Plant Production and Protection Paper No. 187 The annual Joint Meeting of the FAO Panel of Experts on Pesticide Residues in Food and the Environment and WHO Core Assessment Group on Pesticide Residues was held in Rome, Italy, from 3 to 12 October 2006.. The FAO Panel of Experts had met in Preparatory Sessions from 28 September to 2 October. The meeting was held in pursuance of recommendations made by previous meetings and accepted by the governing bodies of FAO and WHO that studies should be undertaken jointly by experts to evaluate possible hazards to humans arising from the occurrence of pesticide residues in foods. This report contains information on ADIs, maximum residue levels and general principles for the evaluation of pesticides. The recommendations of the joint meeting, including further research and information, are proposed for use by Member Governments of the respective agencies and other interested parties.

Checklist of the parasites of fishes of Viet Nam

Richard Arthur, Bui Quang Te This publication is a checklist summarizing information on the parasites of Vietnamese fishes contained in world literature dating from the earliest known record (Billet 1898) to the end of 2003. Information is presented in the form of parasite-host and host-parasite lists and contains 453 named species of parasites. Many records of parasites not identified to species level are also included. The parasite-host list is organized on a taxonomic basis and provides information for each parasite species on the environment (freshwater, brackish water, marine), the location (site of infection) in or on its host(s), the species of host(s) infected, the known geographic distribution (by administrative division) in Viet Nam and the published sources for each host and locality record. The host-parasite list is organized according to the taxonomy of the hosts, and includes, for each host, the English language and local (Vietnamese) common names, environment (freshwater, brackish water, marine), status in Viet Nam (native or exotic) and information on the known distribution in Viet Nam of the parasites. Both lists are accompanied by remarks and footnotes, as warranted, giving specific information on points of systematics, nomenclature, possible misidentifications, introductions, etc. Citations are included for all references, as well as parasite and host indices.

Committee on Fisheries. Report of the third session of the Sub-Committee on Aquaculture. New Delhi, India, 4-8 September 2006
FAO Fisheries Report No. 816 The Sub-Committee appreciated the effort of the FAO Fisheries Department in responding to the recommendations of the second session of the Sub-Committee. Several working documents, including State of world aquaculture 2006 and Prospective analysis of future aquaculture development, were presented by the Secretariat for information, discussion and decision by the Sub-Committee. The Sub-Committee agreed to the International Principles for Responsible Shrimp Farming. The Sub-Committee requested the Secretariat to ensure implementation of priority activities during the intersessional period. The Sub-Committee agreed that its next session should be held in 2008 and appreciated the offer by the Government of Chile to host it.

Report of the fourth meeting of the Planning Group for the Coordination of Acoustic Surveys off Northwest Africa. Dakar, Senegal, 27-29 October 2005
FAO Fisheries Report No. 813 All of the local research vessels conducted acoustic surveys in 2005 and major improvements have been made in standardization of procedures and processing of data. The results of the 2004 parallel survey between the three local vessels and the R/V DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN showed that the four vessels have almost the same acoustic response. Although major improvements have been achieved, some problems still persist, e.g. problems with trawling using the pelagic trawl and problems related to noise levels. These issues are now being addressed. Plans were made for a second parallel survey and intercalibration exercise to take place in October- December 2005. It was recommended that the countries in the Northwest African region, Senegal, the Gambia, Mauritania and Morocco should coordinate their survey effort to conduct two annual regional acoustic surveys, during the cold and warm seasons respectively.

This first volume is a synthesis of the main findings and conclusions of the five country case studies supplemented by additional information and insights on the issue discussed from other sources and FAO's own experience I the region. The volume concludes with a summary of implications and lessons learned to assist countries in restructuring their agricultural sectors for accelerated and/or sustained agricultural and rural development in response to changing market and trade opportunities and to achieve the Millennium Development Goals of poverty and hunger eradication.

Rome, 2006 (FAO & WHO) The General Standard for Food Additives (Codex STAN 192-1995) sets forth the conditions under which permitted food additives may be used in all foods, whether or not they have previously been standarized by Codex. This database provides, in a searchable format, all the provisions for food additives that have been adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. It contains 1112 food additive provisions and covers 292 food additives. The system has an intuitive and user-freindy interface. It includes explanatory text on each page, as well as a glossary of the technical terms. |

Understanding the Codex Alimentarius. Third edition (2006)
Rome, 2006, 146 pp. The Codex Alimentarius, or the food code, has become the global reference point for consumers, food producers and processors, national food control agencies and the international food trade. This booklet was first published in 1999 to foster a wide understanding of the evolving food code and of the activities carried out by the Codex Alimentarius Commission - the joint FAO/WHO body responsible for compiling the standards, codes of practice, guidelines and recommendations that constitute the Codex Alimentarius. Since the first publication there have been many changes to the way in which the Codex works. A new edition of the popular booklet is therefore timely and necessary for understanding the Codex Alimentarius in the twenty-first century.

Bonnes pratiques pour l'industrie de la viande
Manuel FAO de production et santé animales nº 2 Ces dernières années, la crainte de l'opinion publique concernant la sécurité sanitaire des aliments d'origine animale s'est accrue à cause des problèmes qui ont surgi avec l'encéphalopathie spongiforme bovine (ESB), ainsi qu'avec l'apparition de foyers d'infection d'origine alimentaire, et la contamination alimentaire par des agents toxiques (par exemple la dioxine). Ces problèmes ont de graves répercussions sur la sécurité sanitaire des aliments à l'échelle nationale, sur le développement de l'industrie des produits d'origine animale et sur le commerce international des produits de l'élevage. L'objectif de ce manuel sur les Bonnes pratiques pour l'industrie de la viande est de fournir des informations exhaustives et à jour ainsi que des directives pratiques pour l'application du nouveau Code de pratique hygiénique pour la viande, lorsqu'il sera adopté par la Commission du Codex Alimentarius. Cette publication se propose de guider les responsables des abattoirs et de l'industrie de la viande. Elle sera également utile aux vétérinaires s'occupant de l'inspection de la viande, avec leurs fonctions d'encadrement dans l'hygiène de la viande. Le Manuel est publié en modules détachables et fait aussi fonction d'outil de formation.

Rome, 2007, 96 pp., trilingue (En/Fr/Es) Le Sous-Comité s'est félicité des efforts déployés par le Département des pêches de la FAO en vue de donner suite aux recommandations formulées lors de sa deuxième session. Le Secrétariat a soumis au Sous-Comité plusieurs documents de travail, dont un sur la situation mondiale de l'aquaculture 2006 (State of world aquaculture 2006) et un autre sur l'analyse prospective du développement futur de l'aquaculture (Prospective analysis of future aquaculture development), pour information, examen et décision.Le Sous-Comité a approuvé les Principes internationaux pour une crevetticulture responsable. Le Sous-Comité est convenu que sa prochaine session se tiendrait en 2008 et a remercié le Gouvernement du Chili de sa proposition d'accueillir cette session.

Rapport de la quatrième réunion du Groupe de planification pour la coordination des campagnes acoustiques au large de l'Afrique du Nord-Ouest. Dakar, Sénégal, 27-29 octobre 2005
FAO, Rapport sur les pêches nº 813 Tous les navires de recherche locaux ont conduit des campagnes acoustiques en 2005 et des améliorations majeures ont été apportées à la standardisation des procédures et dans le traitement des données. Les résultats de la campagne parallèle 2004 pour les trois navires locaux et le N/R DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN ont montré que les quatre navires ont presque la même réponse acoustique. Bien que des améliorations majeures aient été apportées, certains problèmes persistent, à savoir des problèmes de chalutage avec le chalut pélagique ainsi que des problèmes liés au niveau du bruit. Ces questions sont examinées en ce moment. Une seconde campagne parallèle et un exercice d'intercalibration ont été planifiés pour octobre-décembre 2005. Il a été recommandé que les pays de la région de l'Afrique du Nord-Ouest, Sénégal, Gambie, Mauritanie et Maroc coordonnent leurs efforts de campagne pour conduire deux campagnes acoustiques régionales annuelles, pendant la saison froide et la saison chaude respectivement.

Rapport de la Consultation d'experts sur l'élaboration de directives internationales pour l'étiquetage écologique du poisson et des produits des pêches de capture continentales. Rome, 23-26 mai 2006
FAO, Rapport sur les pêches nº 804 La Consultation d'experts s'est inspirée en grande partie des directives pour l'étiquetage écologique du poisson et des produits des pêches de capture marines qui ont été adoptées à la vingt-sixième session du Comité des pêches et publiées par la FAO en 2005. La Consultation a fait un certain nombre d'ajouts et de modifications à ce document pour qu'il puisse être appliqué aux pêches de capture continentales. A l'origine de la plupart de ces modifications est le souci d'incorporer la pêche fondée sur l'élevage et la pêche aménagée dans la définition des pêches de captures continentales. Les modifications concernent surtout les sections abordant les systèmes de gestion, les stocks cibles, les considérations relatives à l'écosystème et les aspects méthodologiques. L'aquaculture ne figure pas parmi les objectifs de ces directives.

Sécurité alimentaire et développement agricole en Afrique subsaharienne. Dossier pour l'accroissement des soutiens publics. Rapport principal
Bureau régional pour l'Afrique Cette publication contient le principal rapport d'un plaidoyer vivant à un accroissement de l'aide publique à l'agriculture et à la sécurité alimentaire en Afrique subsaharienne (ASS). On affirme qu'il existe quatre raisons principales selon lesquelles l'agriculture ASS mérite un meilleur soutien public. Le premier est un impératif moral. Les gouvernements des pays de l'ASS ne peuvent pas et ne devraient pas ignorer un secteur dont environ 70 pour cent de la population dépend directement pour ses moyens d'existence, s'ils sont sérieux en ce qui concerne leurs engagements aux ODM1. En second lieu, malgré leurs résultats généralement faibles, les pays de l'ASS n'ont aucune possibilité de choix réaliste des stratégies sur lesquelles ils peuvent compter pour parvenir au développement économique durable hormis l'agriculture. Troisièmement, pour un certain nombre de pays de l'ASS, il est évident que les politiques appropriées et l'investissement du secteur public se sont unis pour porter à la croissance économique. Cette publication plaide pour que les pays consolident leurs histoires de succès et pour que d'autres explorent de telles occasions en tenant compte de leurs conditions environnementales, économiques et sociales spécifiques. Quatrièmement, dans l'ensemble l'agriculture dans les pays de l'ASS a généralement obtenu des résultats plus satisfaisants que la plupart des autres secteurs, à l'exception des pays dotés de ressources minérales.

Rome, 2006 (FAO & OMS) La Norme générale pur les additifs alimentaires (Codex STAN 192-1995) stipule les conditions dans lesquelles des additifs alimentaires autorisée peuvent être utilisés dans tous les aliments, qu'ils fassent ou non déjà l'objet d'une norme Codex. Cette base de données contient, sous une forme aisément consultable, toutes les dispositions relatives à des additifs alimentaires adoptés par la Commission du Codex Alimentarius. Elle contient 1112 dispositions relatives aux additifs alimentaires et porte sur 292 additifs alimentaires. Le système a une interface intuitive et conviviale, et contient des explications sur chaque page ainsi qu'un glossaire des termes techniques utilisés. |

Comité de Pesca. Informe de la tercera reunión del Subcomité de Acuicultura. New Delhi, India, 4-8 de septiembre del 2007

Roma, 2007, 96 págs., trilingüe (En/Fr/Es) El Subcomité elogió al Departamento de Pesca de la FAO por las medidas adoptadas en respuesta a las recomendaciones hechas por el Subcomité en su segunda reunión. La Secretaría presentó al Subcomité varios documentos de trabajo para información, debate y decisión, entre ellos un informe sobre el estado mundial de la acuicultura en 2006 (State of world aquaculture 2006) y un análisis prospectivo del desarrollo futuro de la acuicultura (Prospective analysis of future aquaculture development), por los que se felicitó a la Secretaría. El Subcomité acordó los Principios Internacionales para el Cultivo Responsable de Camarón. El Subcomité acordó que su próxima reunión se celebrara en 2008 y manifestó su aprecio por el ofrecimiento del Gobierno de Chile de acogerla.

Informe de la Consulta de Expertos sobre la Elaboración de Directrices Internacionales para el Ecoetiquetado de Pescado y Productos Pesqueros de la Pesca de Captura Continental. Roma, 23-26 de mayo de 2006
FAO, Informe de Pesca Nº 804 La Consulta de Expertos tuvo como principal documento de trabajo las Directrices para el Ecoetiquetado de Pescado y Productos Pesqueros de la Pesca de Captura Marina, aprobadas por el Comité de Pesca en su 26º período de sesiones y publicadas por la FAO en 2005. La Consulta hizo varias adiciones y enmiendas a dicho documento para adaptarlo a la pesca de captura continental. Muchas de tales enmiendas se derivan de la inclusión en la definición de pesca de captura continental de las pesquerías basadas en el cultivo y con fomento de poblaciones. Las enmiendas se relacionaban principalmente con las secciones relativas a sistemas de ordenación, "poblaciones en examen", consideraciones ecosistémicas y aspectos metodológicos. No se incluyó la acuicultura en el ámbito de aplicación de las Directrices.

Roma, 2006 (FAO & OMS), trilingüe (En/Fr/Es) La Norma general para los aditivos alimentarios (Codex STAN 192-1995) establece las condiciones en las que se pueden utilizar aditivos alimentarios autorizados en todos los alimentos, independientemente que de hayan sido regulados previamente o no por le Codex. Esta base de datos contiene, en un formato que permite realizar búsquedas, todas las disposiciones sobre aditivos alimentarios que han sin aprobadas por la Comisión del Codex Alimentarius, y contiene 1112 disposiciones sobre aditivos alimentarios y 292 aditivos alimentarios. El sistema dispone de una interfaz intuitiva y fácil de utilizar. Incluye explicaciones en cada página así como un glosario de término técnicos. |

FAO Fisheries Report No. 807 The Sub-Committee took note of recent developments concerning international trade in fishery products. It also considered specific issues related to international trade and sustainable fisheries development, including: safety and quality of fishery products, traceability and labelling of fishery products, draft Technical Guidelines for Responsible Fish Trade, fish trade and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, harmonization of catch documentation, fish trade and small-scale fisheries, fish trade and food security, rehabilitation and reconstruction of fisheries in tsunami affected countries.

Many of these amendments derived from including culture-based and enhanced fisheries into the definition of inland capture fisheries. Amendments concerned mostly the sections addressing management systems, "stocks under consideration", ecosystem considerations and methodological aspects. Aquaculture was excluded from the scope of the guidelines.
