Manual for the preparation and sale of fruits and vegetables. From field to market
By: Andrés F. López Camelo
FAO Agricultural Services Bulletin No. 151
Rome, 2004, 176 pp.
ISBN 92-5-104991-2
ISSN 1010-1365
TC/M/Y4893/E
$36.00
The fruit and vegetable production sector of Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia and Eastern Europe is facing a new situation where, on the one hand, supermarket chains account for an increasing percentage of the domestic food retail market and, on the other hand, producers must compete in an increasingly demanding global market for non traditional and off-season fruits and vegetables. Producers with the necessary financial, management and technological skills are already meeting the new challenges; however, small farmers are increasingly being marginalized and will be facing unequal market conditions unless they are able to change their practices to meet the needs of a modern food marketing system. Regardless of the production system, the technological challenge is to increase returns through the rational use of available resources, reducing production costs and post-harvest losses, enhancing competitiveness and adding value to the final product. On the basis of these principles, this manual analyses the techniques for reducing post-harvest losses and ensuring quality and food safety from harvest to consumption. The new concept of quality involves ensuring total quality for increasing competitiveness and providing produce that better satisfies the demands of food retailers and, ultimately, the consumers.

Trypanotolerant livestock in the context of trypanosomiasis intervention strategies
By: Kwaku Agyemang
PAAT Technical and Scientific Series No. 7

ISBN 92-5-105262-X
ISSN 1020-7163

Trypanosomiasis poses a considerable constraint on livestock-agricultural development in tsetse-infested areas of sub-Saharan Africa. Many efforts to limit or eradicate trypanosomiasis have failed or have had limited success. However, in certain areas of West Africa, livestock production remains possible, despite the presence of tsetse fly, through the use of cattle and small ruminant breeds that are tolerant to the disease. This paper provides an overview of the problem and the various options for its control. Emphasis is placed on the definition of the role of trypanotolerant livestock as an integrated approach to control the disease.

Management of large pelagic fisheries in CARICOM countries
By: Robin Mahon, Patrick McConney
FAO Fisheries Technical Paper No. 464
Rome, 2004, 162 pp.
ISBN 92-5-105107-0
ISSN 0429-9345
TC/M/Y5308/E
$20.00
Large pelagic fish are important to the small-scale, commercial and recreational fisheries in many Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries. They are seen as an area with potential for growth. As most are transboundary, their management requires collaboration among countries in the context of international fisheries agreements. The FAO Technical Cooperation Programme project described in this report sought to assist CARICOM countries in formulating an approach to the development and management of large pelagic fisheries. The approach involved two thrusts, addressing each group of large pelagics: oceanic and coastal. The project compiled and reviewed a wide range of material on large pelagic fisheries in the Caribbean. This included status of resources, fishery harvest and post-harvest sectors, status of national and regional management initiatives and the extent to which countries are engaged in international management activities such as those undertaken by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).

The purpose of the Workshop was to assist countries in Southeast Asia, People's Republic of China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, to develop capacity so that they would be better placed to elaborate National Plans of Action to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (NPOAs-IUU). The Workshop addressed the 2001 International Plan of Action to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IPOA-IUU) in detail and the Technical Guidelines that have been developed to support the implementation of the IPOA-IUU; concepts of planning and the elaboration of action plans; a case study for the development of a NPOA-IUU; decision-making about IUU fishing and skills enhancement through the identification of key issues relating to NPOAs-IUU, the primary vehicle by which the IPOA-IUU will be implemented by countries. Working groups were formed to encourage maximum participation in the Workshop. A review of the major IUU fishing problems in the region and their possible solutions were discussed.

The Technical Consultation made major recommendations on how to strengthen international cooperation on managing fishing capacity and combating IUU fishing. It also asked FAO to undertake a series of actions to facilitate effective and full implementation of these two IPOAs. Noting in particular an ongoing build-up of capacity in tuna fisheries in the western and central Pacific Ocean, the Technical Consultation suggested that governments in the region should lend priority attention to addressing the situation, including halting introductions of addidional large-scale fishing vessels.
