Global Forest Resources Assessment 2005. Progress towards sustainable forest management
Rome, 2006, 352 pp. FAO has been coordinating global forest resources assessments every five to ten years since 1946. The Global Forest Resources Assessment 2005 (FRA 2005) was carried out between 2003 and 2005 and involved more than 800 people, including 172 officially nominated national correspondents, their colleagues, an Advisory Group, international experts, FAO staff, consultants and volunteers from around the world. Information has been collated from 229 countries and territories for three points in time: 1990, 2000 and 2005. FRA 2005 is the most comprehensive assessment of forests and forestry to date - not only in terms of the number of countries and people involved, but also in terms of scope. It examines the current status and recent trends for about 40 variables covering the extent, condition, uses and values of forests and other wooded land, with the aim of assessing all benefits from forest resources. The results are presented according to six thematic elements of sustainable forest management. FAO worked closely with countries and specialists in the design and implementation of FRA 2005 - through regular contact, expert consultations, training for national correspondents and ten regional and subregional workshops. The outcome is better data, a more transparent reporting process and enhanced national capacity in data analysis and reporting.

Edited by: Ross Shotton This second volume of the Proceedings of the Conference on the Governance and Management of Deep-sea Fisheries, held in Queenstown, New Zealand, from 1 to 5 December 2003, contains papers developed from many of the presentations in the Poster Session of the Conference. Poster-papers presented in this volume address issues of deep-sea oceanography, ecology, fisheries management and governance. The second part of this volume of the Proceedings contains papers that were presented at the workshops held in Dunedin, New Zealand, from 27 to 29 November, just prior to Deep Sea 2003. There were four workshops that addressed the topics of: (i) Assessment and Management of Deepwater Fisheries; (ii) Management of Small-scale Deep-sea Fisheries; (iii) Conservation and Management of Deepwater Chondrichthyan Fishes; and (iv) Bioprospecting in the High Seas.

FAO Fisheries Report No. 793 The purpose of the Workshop was to assist countries in the region to develop capacity to elaborate national plans of action to prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (NPOAs-IUU). The Workshop addressed issues relating to the 1995 FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, the 2001 FAO International Plan of Action to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IPOA-IUU) and the FAO Fisheries Technical Guidelines for Responsible Fisheries No. 9 that have been developed to support the implementation of the IPOA-IUU; concepts of planning and the elaboration of action plans; decision-making about IUU fishing and skills enhancement through the identification of key issues relating to the elaboration of NPOAs-IUU, the primary vehicle by which the IPOA-IUU will be implemented by countries.

Rome, 2005, 100 pp., spiralbound The purpose of this Assessment Tool (AT) is to contribute to strengthening community-based food and nutrition programmes. The ultimate objective of the AT is to help the users launch and develop a process to strengthen their country's ability to address the causes of malnutrition. It is generally agreed that we need to address not only the immediate causes of malnutrition, but also their underlying factors if we are to achieve nutritional well being and reach functional and productive capacity of a population. The methodology is divided into four sections covering programme design, the macroenvironment, the microenvironment, and sustainability. The AT is used for making suggestions for action following the assessment. Anticipated users are normally food and nutrition programme planners, but any number of individuals with planning and programmatic responsibility who are concerned about poverty alleviation and overall development can, and should, be part of the Assessment Team.

Legal framework for the management of animal genetic resources, (The)
By: Antonella Ingrassia, Daniele Manzella, Elzbieta Martyniuk Based on information gathered mainly through national surveys, the study provides an overview of the main legal instruments governing the management of animal genetic resources at the national level. Relevant international and regional regulatory frameworks are also examined. As the policy debate on the management of animal genetic resources evolves in various fora, and as FAO develops the Global Strategy for the Management of Farm Animal Genetic Resources, the discussion on legal issues will take centre stage. The study aims to contribute to such discussion through a general assessment of the status of national regulatory frameworks and general recommendations for national legislation development.

Alimentos tales como cereales, peces y verduras non son comestibles en su estado natural. Otros, como la yuca o mandioca serían peligrosos si se consumieran sin elaborar. Son múltiples los procesos que se han desarrollado para la transformación de los alimentos, y donde quiera que existan comunidades de personas, los tratamientos, métodos y recetas son un reflejo de sus necesidades de alimentación, energía, sabor, aroma y placer. Mediante la trasformación se mantiene una oferta más segura de alimentos, se puede optimizar su calidad original y, adicionalmente, puede constituir una fuente de ingresos para mejorar los medios de vida de las personas que se dedican a esta actividad de forma comercial. La industria alimentaria constituye una buena fuente de ingresos para los empresarios rurales.

Sintetizando las conclusiones de una consulta mixta de expertos FAO/OMS celebrada en Roma del 2 al 6 de febrero de 1998, el informe examina los elementos y los principios rectores de la comunicación de riesgos. Otros temas tratados son los obstáculos que se oponen a una comunicación de riesgos eficaz, así como las estrategias para lograrla. Asimismo se proporcionan recomendaciones al respecto destinadas a los gobiernos, a la industria, a las organizaciones de consumidores y a órganos internacionales como la Comisión del Codex Alimentarius.

FAO Fisheries Report No. 780 The Committee reviewed the issues of an international character and the programme of work of the FAO Fisheries Department in fisheries and aquaculture. The Committee commended FAO on its report on the implementation of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and its associated instruments and called for a decade of implementation of the various instruments developed to ensure responsible fisheries. The Committee called upon Members to accept, ratify or accede to, as appropriate, these instruments. The Committee encouraged FAO to elaborate additional guidelines in support of the Code, including one for the implementation of the International Plan of Action for the Management of Fishing Capacity.
