This volume presents a fully illustrated field guide for the identification of the sharks and rays most relevant to the fisheries of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. An extensive literature review and two field surveys in the region were carried out for the preparation of this document. A total of 49 sharks and 45 batoids reliably reported for the region are listed and those common in the fisheries or likely to be found through fisheries operations are fully treated. The guide includes sections on technical terms and measurements for sharks and batoids, and fully illustrated keys to those orders and families that occur in the region. Color plates for a large number of the species are included.

Management, co-management or no management? Major dilemmas in southern African freshwater fisheries. 2. Case studies
FAO Fisheries Technical Paper No. 426/2
Rome, 2003, 274 pp.
ISBN 92-5-105032-5
ISSN 0429-9345
TC/M/Y5056/E
$56.00
This volume contains reports of ten case studies of freshwater fisheries in southern Africa. A synthesis of these reports can be found in FAO Fisheries Technical Paper 426/1 (ISBN 92-5-104919-X). The case studies were conducted in five medium-sized lakes in four countries: the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Five of the case studies focus on the biological and environmental effects of fishing while the remaining five are concerned with historical and sociological analysis. In different ways all of them address one or more of the following three features, relevant for the management of freshwater fisheries in the SADC region: Has fishing effort developed in these lakes over the last 50 years? What causes the changes in fishing effort? How do fishing effort and environmental factors compare in their effects on the regeneration of fish stocks?

Maritime societies, fisheries law and institutions in the western Mediterranean. A summary of collective rights and decentralized systems of professional discipline
FAO Fisheries Technical Paper No. 420
Rome, 2004, 64 pp.
ISBN 92-5-104696-4
ISSN 0429-9345
TR/M/Y2788/E
$15.00
This publication considers fisheries management policies in the Mediterranean in the light of the new objectives of sustainability and governance. Emphasis is put on the decentralization of public action and the reform of institutional mechanisms. The first chapter assesses the historical and societal bases of the dualism of small-scale fisheries and industrial fisheries. The similarity of the legal frameworks governing access to fisheries, the statutes of the profession and the areas of intervention by the administration are considered in Chapter II. Chapter III looks at the institutional convergences between the countries of the region. The author underlines the various initiatives aimed at rebuilding the communities' principles of self-regulation, and questions the policy-makers' capacity to commit themselves to policies of territorial allocation, as well as the communities' capacity toulfil a regulatory function enforceable in the industrial sector. Legal validation of the communities and their traditional rules of management over territories to be allocated would be a priority.

The Workshop was organized in recognition of the potential role of commercial aquaculture to achieve poverty alleviation and food security growth and employment creation in the region. The main recommendation from the workshop to the Governments of both countries included the need for preparing clear national policies for commercial aquaculture development, promoting start-up aquaculture and allied industries, defining clear models for economic and financial viability assessments to be applied by funding institutions, facilitating borrowing for commercial operations, disseminating research findings to farmers and information sharing at all levels of aquaculture development, as well as awareness-raising among customers on aquaculture products to increase demand for fish.

Evaluaciones técnico-económicas de la pesca marítima
FAO Documento técnico de pesca Nº 421
Roma, 2004, 86 págs.
ISBN 92-5-304693-7
ISSN 1014-1138
TC/M/Y2786/S
$15.00
