Food engineering, quality and competitiveness in small food industry systems with emphasis on Latin America and the Caribbean

By: Roberto Cuevas
FAO Agricultural Services Bulletin No. 156
Rome, 2004, 98 pp.
ISBN 92-5-105250-6
ISSN 1010-1365
TC/M/Y5788/E
$24.00

Small food industries operate within a web of macroeconomic, microeconomic, social and technical forces that determine competitiveness within the sector. This bulletin proposes to utilize the systems approach to establish the analytical context for all factors affecting food quality and safety, and hence food industry competitiveness, and identify the engineering variables intrinsic to the food industries and their environment and which, once improved, will make the sector more competitive. The document presents a conceptual methodological proposal whereby any strategy based on the above approach will make it possible to identify and address the priority needs of the small and medium food industries sector in Latin America and the Caribbean region and to respond efficiently and effectively to those needs through sound action. The ideas proposed in this bulletin address, from the food engineering and technology perspective, the complex issues faced by small food industries in today's markets, where high quality and safe foods are demanded by consumers, and all businesses, no matter how big or small, must be competitive to survive and succeed.

Pestice residues in food - 2003. Joint FAO/WHO Meeting on Pesticide Residues. Evaluations 2003 Part II - Toxicological

Geneva, 2004, 400 pp.
ISBN 92-4-166519-X
$81.00

(Published by WHO. Available from FAO only by standing order together with Part I - Residues) This volume contains toxicological monographs that were prepared by the 2003 Joint FAO/WHO Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR), which met in Geneva from 15 to 24 September, 2003. The monographs in this volume summarize the safety data on 13 pesticides that could leave residues in food commodities. These pesticides are carbosulfan, cyprodinil, dimethoate, famoxadone, malathion, methoxyfenozide, paraquat, phosmet, pyraclostrobin, pyrethrins, tebufenozide and terbufos. The data summarized in the toxicological monographs served as the basis for the acceptable dietary intakes and acute reference doses that were established by the Meeting. This volume and previous volumes of JMPR toxicological evaluations, many of which were published in the FAO Plant Production and Protection Paper series, contain information that is useful to companies that produce pesticides, government regulatory offi- cers, industrial testing laboratories, toxicological laboratories and universities.

Seed multiplication by resource-limited farmers

FAO Plant Production and Protection Paper No. 180
Rome, 2004, 102 pp.
ISBN 92-5-105217-4
ISSN 0259-2517
TC/M/Y5706/E
$20.00

FAO, through its Seed and Plant Genetics Resources Service, is conducting a series of expert consultations, workshops and conferences to generate ideas, develop methodologies and facilitate initiatives aimed at strengthening on-farm seed multiplication (the informal seed system), thereby addressing the seed security needs of smallholder farmers. As in sub-Saharan Africa, the informal seed system in Latin America receives inadequate attention from policy-makers and is not accorded the importance it deserves in the agricultural production system. FAO, with funding from the Netherlands, organized the Latin American Workshop on Seed Multiplication by Resource-limited Farmers to identify the major constraints facing on-farm seed production and the groups of resource-limited farmers to be targeted, and to propose solutions for increasing the availability of good quality seed to small holder farmers. These proceedings should serve both as a good record of the workshop and as a guide towards the development of interventions by Latin American governments, as well as by national and international institutions and agencies that may desire to assist further in this topic.

Groundwater in international law. Compilation of treaties and other legal instruments

By: Stefano Burchi, Kerstin Mechlem
FAO Legislative Study No. 86
Rome, 2005, 584 pp.
ISBN 92-5-105231-X
ISSN 1014-6679
TC/M/Y5739/E
$30.00

Groundwater is of high social, economic, environmental and strategic importance. It represents about ninety-seven percent of the fresh water resources available on earth, excluding the water locked in the polar ice. Aquifers, among them numerous transboundary ones, are coming under growing pressure from over-abstraction and pollution, which seriously threaten their sustainability. Up to now international law has paid much less attention to ground- than to surface water. Slowly however, a body of rules dealing with this vital resource is emerging that indicates a trend towards more comprehensive international regulation. This publication brings together binding and non-binding international law instruments that, in varying degrees and from different angles, deal with groundwater. Its aim is to report developments in international law and to contribute to detecting law in-the-making in this important field.

Des méthodes simples, adaptées aux petits fermiers y sont recommandées. Le choix des cultures en fonction des systèmes de production agricole et des zones agro-écologiques ainsi que l'utilisation du fourrage conservé y sont étudiés. Health management and biosecurity maintenance in white shrimps (Penaeus vannamei) hatcheries in Latin America (Chinese version)

FAO Fisheries Technical Paper No. 450

ISBN 92-5-505022-2
ISSN 1728-7332

This publication provides technical guidance for the effective and responsible operation of shrimp hatcheries in Latin America. The document was compiled through an extensive consultative process undertaken from 2001 to 2003 that involved inputs from government-designated national coordinators, regional and international experts, representatives from several intergovernmental organizations, private sector representatives and FAO. This process was made possible through the FAO Regional Technical Cooperation Programme project - Assistance to health management of shrimp culture in Latin America: TCP/RLA/0071 (A)- - which involved the participation of 14 countries of the region, several intergovernmental organizations, shrimp hatchery operators and farmers, and individual experts. It is envisaged that this document will provide a firm basis for the improvement of the health and quality of hatchery-produced Penaeus vannamei postlarvae in Latin America.
