There have always been people in the community who keep bees. Bees pollinate a wide range of flowers and plants and, by so doing, provide the seed for the next harvest. Pollination services are an important source of income in the industrial countries, and the practice is gaining merit wherever commercial farming is encouraged. More practically, however, a colony of bees provides food and income for a family. Honey and wax find ready markets in local communities. Honey is the basis for a range of sweeteners, drinks, medicines and foods, and a well-managed hive can provide 30 kg or more annually. Wax is widely used as an industrial feedstock for candle-making, polish and other products. Bees can be kept wherever there is a forage - in towns or the country. You are never too old or too young to work with bees.

Livelihoods grow in gardens

FAO Diversification booklet No. 2
Rome, 2004, 56 pp.
ISBN 92-5-105072-4
ISSN 1810-0775
TC/M/Y5112/E
$14.00

Farming begins in home garden with skills and experiences that come from making every plant and every tree count. There is, in principle, no difference between the farm and the garden - same crop care, the value of soil nutrients, the strategic use of water and the knowledge that comes farm planting, transplanting, pruning and harvesting that bets suits the productivity of the plants. Gardens feed people and their livestock, and provide the basis for a regular and reliable source of goods for sales at local markets. With a treasured garden everyone wins, and the seasonal differences that bring a changing weather pattern help with rotations, with the control of pests and diseases, with nutrient recycling and, importantly, with the provision of employment and income. A well-managed garden will provide wealth throughout the year.

Most food needs some form of preparation and processing to make them more attractive to eat. Foods such as grains, fish and vegetable are unpalatable in their raw state. Others such as cassava are dangerous if eaten without processing. Many different processes have been developed and, wherever there are communities of people, the treatments, methods and recipes used will be a reflection of their requirements. Processing provides for security food supply, it can enhance the keeping quality of the original materials and, moreover, it can provide the basis for making a reasonable living. Food industries are an excellent source of income for the entrepreneur.

This technology review presents the latest understanding of Newcastle Disease, its characteristics, epidemiology, symptoms and control. It will be of practical value to state and private veterinarians and to all those involved with rural poultry production who wish to control this disease.

ISBN 92-5-105064-3

This art book contains over 350 colour photographs by Marzio Marzot, documented information on traditional food production systems, scientific details and notes from a journey through one of the world' s outstanding region: the Lake Chad Basin in Africa. It provides an insight into the life and customs of the local farmers, fishermen and pastoralists who foster, maintain and utilize biodiversity in their traditional agricultural systems, thereby deploying the knowledge and techniques that they have accumulated over many centuries. FAO promotes the sharing of experiences and awareness related to the role of rural people in conserving and sustainably using agricultural biodiversity. Building on the local knowledge and social organization of farmers is indispensable. The images in this book are a tribute to the knowledge and work of farmers and their care for the land.

This title is part of a collection of special books combining high-quality photographs and technical texts, aimed at creating awareness on people's vital role in biodiversity over the five continents, prepared by the FAO Interdepartmental Working Group on Biological Diversity for Food and Agriculture. It will not be included in standing orders.
