Protein sources for the animal feed industry. Expert Consultation and Workshop. Bangkok, 29- April-3 May 2002
FAO Animal Production and Health Proceedings No. 1 This Consultation included talks by experts on the overview of world protein needs and supply; scientific aspects of protein nutrition of farm animals; local protein resources and supplementation for livestock production; the agricultural alternatives for the production of increased supplies of protein feeds from oilseeds, legumes and by-products; and innovative developments in the production and delivery of protein raw materials. It also included a discussion on the world market and sources of proteins for the animal feed industry: present and future trends, problems and perceptions of feed safety and developments in the feed industry.

Mapping coastal aquaculture and fisheries structures by satellite imaging radar. Case study of the Lingayen Gulf, the Philippines
FAO Fisheries Technical Paper No. 459 Inventory and monitoring of coastal aquaculture and fisheries structures provide important baseline data for decision-making in planning and development, including regulatory laws, environmental protection and revenue collection. Mapping these structures can be performed with good accuracy and at regular intervals by satellite remote sensing, which allows observation of vast areas, often of difficult accessibility, at a fraction of cost of traditional surveys. This study is based on interpretation of satellite imaging radar data and a detailed image analysis procedure id described. The report aims at the necessary technology transfer for and operational use of the approach indicated in other similar environments.

Préparation des plans d'intervention contre la péripneumonie contagieuse bovine
Manuel FAO de santé animale nº 14 La péripneumonie contagieuse bovine (PPCB) constitue un obstacle important pour la production bovine en Afrique et dans les autres régions du monde. La maladie semblait être maîtrisée mais elle est réapparue de façon spectaculaire depuis une dizaine d'années, touchant des zones auparavant non contaminées. Les effets de la PPCB sur les populations de bovins dans les zones nouvellement touchées sont désastreux. L'objectif de ce manuel est de fournir les lignes directrices et d'offrir une source de références facile pour aider les pays à établir leurs propres politiques de planification nationale et leurs stratégies, et à choisir les moyens de lutte contre les foyers de PPCB.

Sécurité en mer, élément essentiel de la gestion des pêches, (La)
FAO, Circulaire sur les pêches nº 966 De tout temps, la pêche a été un métier dangereux, et elle l'est encore. Elle comportera toujours des risques, même si les mesures prises pour les réduire ont permis d'obtenir de bons résultats, en particulier dans les régions du monde avancées sur le plan technologique. Dans les pays en développement, la sécurité en mer reste un très grave problème. Dans le présent document, il est préconisé d'intégrer la sécurité en mer à la gestion générale des pêches dans chaque pays. Les promoteurs de la sécurité s'accordent tous maintenant à reconnaître qu'une formation obligatoire à la sécurité est la condition préalable pour obtenir de bons résultats.

Documents de la FAO sur l'éthique nº 1 La FAO mène actuellement un nombre croissant d'activités interdisciplinaires concernant les questions d'éthique. Cette nouvelle collection, intitulée Documents de la FAO sur l'éthique, rend compte des résultats de ces activités, qui ont été réalisées dans le cadre du Programme de travail ordinaire. Elle vient compléter les documents de la Collection FAO : questions d'éthique, ainsi que les rapports du Groupe d'experts éminents en matière d'éthique alimentaire et agricole. Il a été reconnu que le fait de vivre à l'abri de la faim figurait parmi les droits fondamentaux de l'être humain. La sécurité sanitaire des aliments fait partie intégrante du concept de droit à une alimentation adéquate. Lors des crises, est-il éthiquement acceptable d'abaisser les normes de sécurité sanitaires applicables à l'aide alimentaire, par rapport à celles régissant les échanges internationaux d'aliments ? Le présent rapport examine cette question de manière approfondie.

Documentos de la FAO sobre ética Nº 1 La FAO está emprendiendo un creciente número de actividades interdisciplinarias relacionadas con ética. Documentos de la FAO sobre ética es una serie que recoge los resultados de tales actividades, realizadas como parte integral del programa de trabajo de la Organización. Esta serie complementa la serie Estudios FAO: Cuestiones de ética y los informes de Cuadro des Expertos Eminentes sobre la Ética en la Alimentación y la Agricultura. El derecho a vivir liberados del hambre se ha designado como un derecho humano fundamental. La inocuidad de los alimentos constituye parte intrínseca del concepto de del derecho a una alimentación adecuada. ¿Es éticamente aceptable que en situaciones de crisis alimentaría los niveles de inocuidad de los alimentos sean inferiores para la ayuda alimentaria que para el comercio de alimentos? En este informe se estudia a fondo la cuestión.

The State of Food and Agriculture 2003-04
FAO Agriculture Series No. 35 The State of Food and Agriculture 2003-04 explores the potential of agriculture biotechnology - especially transgenic crops - to meet the needs of the poor. It is found that agricultural biotechnology can help the poor by reducing reliance on toxic agricultural chemicals, lowering production costs for farmers, enhancing the nutritional contents of food and improving the control of plant and animal diseases. These gains can boost agricultural productivity and reduce food prices, but the benefits may not reach the poor. The report also presents an analysis of the socio-economic impacts of technological change in agriculture and surveys the current evidence regarding the safety of transgenic crops for human health and the environment. It recommends targeted investments in agricultural research, extension and regulatory capacity to ensure that the potential of agricultural biotechnology is brought to bear the needs of the poor. |

Syrian agriculture at the crossroads
FAO Agricultural Policy and Economic Development Series No. 8 This publication presents a review of past and current agricultural policies in the Syrian Arab Republic. Part One illustrates the conditions and the contribution of the agriculture sector to the national economy. Part Two examines the economics of the main subsectors in agriculture; the "strategic crops" under government planning and other important subsectors; and processing and marketing, with particular reference to the dairy and horticulture subsectors. Part Three examines the structural and institutional factors determining the availability and use patterns of the production factors and inputs for agriculture production: the diversity of agriculture producers, land tenure and labour relations, irrigation water policies, and the inputs, credit supply and distribution systems. The book acknowledges that the reforms initiated more than a decade ago have been conducted cautiously, thereby avoiding the economic and social disruptions that have caused great losses and suffering in many other countries.
