FAO Plant Production and Protection Paper No. 189/2 Order on-line The annual Joint Meeting of the FAO Panel of Experts on Pesticide Residues in Food and the Environment and WHO Core Assessment Group on Pesticide Residues was held in Rome, Italy, from 3 to 12 October 2006. The FAO Panel of Experts had met in Preparatory Sessions from 28 September to 2 October. The meeting was held in pursuance of recommendations made by previous meetings and accepted by the governing bodies of FAO and WHO that studies should be undertaken jointly by experts to evaluate possible hazards to humans arising from the occurrence of pesticide residues in foods. During the meeting, the FAO Panel of Experts was responsible for reviewing pesticide use patterns (good agricultural practices), data on the chemistry and composition of the pesticides and methods of analysis for pesticide residues and for estimating the maximum residue levels that might occur as a result of the use of the pesticides according to good agricultural practices. The WHO Core Assessment Group was responsible for reviewing toxicological and related data and for estimating, where possible, acceptable daily intakes (ADIs) of the pesticides for humans. This report, in two volumes, contains information on ADIs, maximum residue levels and general principles for the evaluation of pesticides. The recommendations of the joint meeting, including further research and information, are proposed for use by Member Governments of the respective agencies and other interested parties.

FAO Fisheries Report No. 797 The meeting noted that the diversity in practices of the establishment and management of Fish Aggregating Devices [FADs] and agreed that there was a need for more cooperation and exchanges on moored FAD fishing at the subregional level to ensure sustainability in the exploitation of the shared fish resources that aggregate around FAD. This report consists of Part I that summarizes the presentations, discussions and decisions of the meeting and Part II that contains the full national reports, case studies and technical presentations in the language in which they were presented.

Report of the Regional Workshop on the Monitoring and Management of Queen Conch, Strombus gigas. Kingston, Jamaica, 1- 5 May 2006
FAO Fisheries Report No. 832 The purpose of the workshop was to assist Caribbean countries in the development of effective management plans for queen conch fisheries and, consequently, to improve their capacity to implement regulations and obligations under the Convention on International trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora and the Protocol Concerning Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife of the Cartagena Convention. This report includes, in the main body, the workshop objectives and programme, national reports from participating countries, analysis of issues from the subregional management zones and main conclusions of the workshop. Draft national management plans completed by individual participants and other workshops outputs are documented in the appendix to this report.

Report of the second FAO Ad Hoc Expert Advisory Panel for the Assessment of Proposals to Amend Appendices I and II of CITIES Concerning Commercially-exploited Aquatic Species. Rome, 26-30 March 2007
FAO Fisheries Report No. 833 The Panel was convened in response to the agreement by the twenty-fifth session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) on the Terms of Reference for an ad hoc expert advisory panel for assessment of proposals to the Convention on International Trade in endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), and to the endorsement of the twenty-sixth session of COFI to convene the Panel for relevant proposals to future CITES Conference of the Parties. The objectives of the Panel were to: i) assess each proposal from a scientific perspective in accordance with the CITES biological listing criteria (Resolution Conf. 9.24 [Rev. CoP13]); ii) comment, as appropriate, on technical aspects of the proposal in relation to biology, ecology, trade and management issues, as well as, to the extent possible, the likely effectiveness for conservation. Seven proposals were evaluated by the Panel.

Capacidad de pesca y manejo pesquero en América Latina y el Caribe
Por: Agüero, M. El Plan Internacional para la Ordenación de la Capacidad Pesquera fue adoptado por el Comité de Pesca de la FAO en febrero de 1999. La FAO ha desempeñado una función importante en el proceso de adopción del plan a través de la preparación de pautas y recomendaciones técnicas. Destacados científicos de América Latina y el Caribe han realizado una serie de estudios que constituyen un primer paso hacia la mejor comprensión de los problemas de capacidad y sobrecapacidad en las pesquerías de la región. En esta publicación se presentan 11 estudios de casos. La primera sección se centra en aspectos conceptuales, metodológicos y de políticas de gestión de la capacidad y políticas relativas al exceso y a la subutilización de la capacidad. La segunda sección contiene un examen general de las políticas de ordenación pesquera en América Latina y el Caribe. Los estudios de casos abarcan una amplia gama de especies, cuestiones metodológicas y problemas de gestión de la capacidad.

Género y legislación. Los derechos de la mujer en la agricultura (Rev.1)
Por: Cotula, L. Las mujeres constituyen una parte sustancial de la población económicamente activa dedicada a la agricultura. Los instrumentos internacionales de derechos humanos, medioambiente y desarrollo sostenible proclaman el principio de no discriminación por razón de sexo o de género. Sin embargo las mujeres frecuentemente se encuentran con obstáculos de género a la hora de ejercer sus derechos y de alimentar a sus familias. Así, el derecho a un nivel de vida adecuado, que incluye una alimentación adecuada, puede verse vulnerado. Estos obstáculos pueden derivarse de normas directa o indirectamente discriminatorias, de prácticas socioculturales profundamente arraigadas o de ambas cosas. El presente estudio analiza desde una perspectiva de género la legislación relativa a la agricultura existente en distintos países del mundo, examinando la condición jurídica de la mujer en tres esferas clave: los derechos sobre la tierra y los recursos naturales; los derechos de las trabajadoras agrícolas; y los derechos de las trabajadoras autónomas del sector agrario, desde la condición de la mujer en las cooperativas rurales hasta su acceso a los servicios de crédito, capacitación y extensión agrícola.
