Introducing fisheries subsidies

FAO Fisheries Technical Paper No. 437
Rome, 2003, 58 pp.
ISBN 92-5-104935-1
ISSN 0429-9345
TC/M/Y4647/E
$16.00

Introducing fisheries subsidies explains why fishery subsidies are of concern, discusses alternatives to subsidies, explains why they are implemented and briefly considers the difficulties caused by their existence. The discussion then sharpens the focus to analyse a number of relevant topics. The final chapter considers current discussions on how the international community might be able to impose sufficient discipline to bring the subsidies that stimulate overfishing under control. There follows a more technical discussion of the linkage between fishery subsidies and their effects on sustainability and trade.

Management, co-management or no management? Major dilemmas in southern African freshwater fisheries. 1. Synthesis report

FAO Fisheries Technical Paper No. 426/1
Rome, 2003, 136 pp.
ISBN 92-5-104919-X
ISSN 0429-9345
TC/M/Y4593/E
$21.00

Fisheries in the South Africa Development Community freshwaters are found to function as an economic buffer and as a safety valve for thousands of people moving in and out of the fisheries according to the opportunities in the national economies. At the same time the stocks tend to be less threatened than many tend to believe. Classical management theory's emphasis on limiting numbers of fishermen and co-management strategies such as exclusive economic zoning may represent a danger to the stability of this situation, even if management may be required to maintain biodiversity. There may be a need also to monitor and establish measures to control investment-driven growth in effort.

Mountains of the world cover about one-fifth of the land surface, are home to one-tenth of the world’s population, and provide livelihood to some of the poorest communities in the world. Mountain lakes and streams are a source of freshwater for countless riparian human communities, support industries, provide water for irrigation and hydropower electricity production and for fish. Fisheries play an important role in providing food and income to people in mountain areas.
