REPRINT: Fishing boat construction: 2. Building a fibreglass fishing boat

By: Ned Coackley, Y. Bryn, Glan Conwy
FAO Fisheries Technical Paper No. 321
Rome, 1991 (first edition), 2005 (this reprint), 92 pp.
ISBN 92-5-103116-9
ISSN 0429-9345
TC/M/T0530/E
$16.00

The contents are intended to give the reader a sound basic knowledge of fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) and it's possibilities and limitations in boatbuilding. Any person using the document is likely to have some technical or management capacity upon which to base the information. It is not intended to describe all aspects of FRP, but attempts to cover most subjects applicable to small vessel construction and setting up a new boatyard. The publication leads up to and deals mainly with the single skin manual layup technique, however, other FRP technologies are also presented. Sections such as Design and Construction Considerations, Planning for Construction and the Production Flow Chart are intended to stimulate appraisal of the requirements of FRP boatbuilding while others such as Workshop, Equipment and Tools and Basic Vessel Construction offer practical guidelines.

Manual on hatchery production of seabass and gilthead seabream. Volume 2

By: Alessandro Moretti, Mario Pedini Frenandez-Criado, René Vetillart
Rome, 2005, 162 pp.
ISBN 92-5-105304-9
TC/M/Y6018/E
$40.00

Seabass and gilthead seabream are the two marine fish species that have characterized the development of marine aquaculture in the Mediterranean basin in the last three decades. The substantial increase in production levels of these two species that used to be high-values ones and now are considerably cheaper was made possible by the progressive improvement in the technologies for fry production in hatcheries. As a result, more than 100 hatcheries have been built in the Mediterranean basin, working on these and other similar species. At present the farmed production of these two species derived from hatchery produced fry is far greater than the supply coming from capture fisheries. This second and final volume of the manual deals with the design and construction of the hatchery and its various sections, engineering aspects of water supply, hydraulic circuits, and equipment used in the hatcheries. It also includes guidance on financial aspects that could be useful for the project design and operation of hatcheries, a series of technical annexes, and a glossary of scientific and technical terms used in the two volumes.

Report of the third meeting on the Planning Group for the Coordination of Acoustic Surveys off Northwest Africa. Dakar, Senegal, 22-23 October 2004

FAO Fisheries Report No. 769
Rome, 2005 72 pp., Bilingual(En/Fr)
ISBN 92-5-005435-1
ISSN 0429-9337
TR/M/A0271/Bi
$18.00

The meeting was the third of its kind, following two meetings in Dakar, Senegal, from 26 to 28 October 2002 and from 28 to 29 October 2003. The scientists from the Northwest African region expressed their commitment to conduct their own acoustic surveys. All of the local research vessels conducted acoustic surveys in 2004. The ability of running acoustic surveys in the sub-region has developed to a good level and focus in the future should be on the development of human capacity and to resolve the recurrent technical problems of trawl performance, noise discrimination and data storage. The timeframe of the continued surveys with R/V DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN and the support through the Nansen Programme is unknown and high priority must therefore be given to the improvement of scientists skills in acoustic abundance estimation.

Importance of soil organic matter, (The). Key to drought-resistant soil and sustained food production

By: Alexandra Bot, José Benites
FAO Soils Bulletin No. 11
Rome, 2005, 92 pp.
ISBN 92-5-105366-9
ISSN 0253-2050
TC/M/A0100/E
$30.00

Soil organic matter - the product of on-site biological decomposition - affects the chemical and physical properties of the soil and its overall health. Its composition and breakdown rate affect: the soil structure and porosity; the water infiltration rate and moisture holding capacity of soils; the diversity and biological activity of soil organisms; and plant nutrient availability. This document concentrates on the organic matter dynamics of cropping soils and discusses the circumstances that deplete organic matter and their negative outcomes. It then moves on to more proactive solutions. It reviews a "basket" of practices in order to show how they can increase organic matter content and discusses the land and cropping benefits that then accrue.

Improving nutrition programmes. An assessment tool for action. Users' training manual

By: Mickey Chopra, Smruti Patel, David Sanders
Rome, 2004, 92 pp., spiralbound
ISBN 92-5-105184-4
TC/M/Y5563/E
$22.00

In 2002, FAO published Improving nutrition programmes - an assessment tool for action to assist programme managers in improving the impact and sustainability of food and nutrition programmes. However, during the participatory-led development process the need was felt for a sound orientation procedure on which the assessment team - comprised not only of nutrition workers but also of partners from related sectors - could build a common vision and develop its capacity to conduct the programme assessment in a rigorous, efficient and systematic manner. This companion Users' training manual has thus been prepared to maintain a better focus on the assessment process. It consists of six topics to be taught and discussed over a period of three to five days. Each topic includes key issues, case studies, ideas for discussion related to conducting an assessment, trainer's notes and a set of handouts for the learners. It can also be adapted to varying levels of knowledge and to the amount of time available. Together these publications constitute valuable tools for all those involved in assessing community-based food and nutrition programmes.
