M S Swaminathan and Maryam Rahmanian elected Chair and Vice-Chair of the Steering Committee of the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition.
The Steering Committee of the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE) has met in Rome 16-17 September for their first face-to-face meeting since their appointment by the Bureau of the CFS. Steering Committee members designated their Chair and Vice-Chair.
MS Swaminathan (India) and Maryam Rahmanian (Iran) were respectively acclaimed as Chair and Vice-Chair of the Steering Committee of the HLPE.
The High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition was created as part of the reform of the global governance of food security and nutrition, to serve as the expertise and scientific arm of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS). The 15 members of the Steering Committee of the HLPE had been recently appointed by the Bureau of the CFS.
In creating the HLPE, governments decided to let the Panel produce its recommendations and advice independently from governmental positions, in order to enrich discussions and debates at CFS. This will be done through a rigorous process that will combine scientific knowledge with experiences on the ground. It will add value to research and analysis already conducted by the universities, research institutions or international organizations.
The 15 experts of the Steering Committee of the HLPE have met in Rome on 16 and17 September.
Fruitful dialogue between experts and decision-makers.
The HLPE also met with the Bureau and the Advisory Group of the CFS, with a fruitful dialogue between the experts and representatives from governments and other stakeholders (CSOs, NGOs, UN organizations, research institutions, private sector).
Views were expressed that the HLPE is an original tool that will help maintain focus on food and nutrition security in the development agenda at all levels (national and international) and not only during periods of crises.
The CFS Plenary (11-16 October 2010) will decide on the topics to be commissioned to the HLPE. The HLPE itself will also have a strategic role in identifying emerging issues related to food security, thus helping the international community prioritize policies and programmes to fight food insecurity.
