The side event will present some aspects related to the importance of national governance systems on Food and Nutrition Security to the overall realization of the Right to Food and the achievement of food security.

It aims at discussing the role of social participation and multistakeholder platforms in promoting the Right to Food as a key element to the eradication of hunger and malnutrition. It will also touch upon the Human Rights based approach to FSN.

The topic of the Side Event attracted a high attendance.

The side event addressed the importance of the Right to Food (RtF) in the context of all Human Rights and the role that national FSN governance plays in promoting it. It also encouraged a debate on the multisectoral and multistakeholder approach to FSN and its relevance to the realization of the Right to Food;

The event discussed how countries can develop governance systems (comprised of policies, legislation and institutions, as well as participatory spaces for those most affected by violations) that protect, respect and fulfil the Right to Food, supporting the achievement of food and nutritional security.

The side event was an invitation to CFS to re-visit the Right to Food, supported by FAO and donors;

The role of CFS in setting standards at the global level – even if only in the form of voluntary guidelines – is an immensely important contribution to the achievement of broad, global goals. These guidelines however remain hollow if there is no follow-up in both the material sense, such as staff and projects, and the continuous involvement of CFS, for instance by monitoring progress on regular intervals.

It is key to enable FAO to establish a unit dedicated to the right to food that ensures  that RtF in this sense functions like other cross-cutting concerns and is considered by every staff and embedded in every project.
