Monitoring

The Commission oversees the operation of several databases, which allow it to monitor the status of genetic resources and activities taken by countries to implement the Commission’s instruments.

World Information and Early Warning System on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture

The World Information and Early Warning System (WIEWS)  facilitates exchange of information on plant genetic resources among member countries as well as periodic assessments of the status of plant genetic resources conservation, sustainable use and capacity. It includes:

WIEWS Global Network of National Focal Points The National Focal Points monitor the implementation of the Second Global Plan of Action for PGRFA and periodically prepare progress reports on the state of PGRFA. The National Focal Points, appointed by Governments, provide their reports through a dedicated Reporting Tool. View list of National Focal Points.

WIEWS database The WIEWS database is populated with information from direct contributions made by countries on the implementation of

  • the Second Global Plan of Action for PGRFA, based on indicators adopted by the CGRFA at its 14th Regular Session. 24 indicators focus on PGRFA conservation; 20 indicators on sustainable use of PGRFA; and 19 indicators on institutional and human capacity (see Appendix C of CGRFA-14/13/Report); and
  • Target 2.5 (plant component) of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), based on indicator 2.5.1 which is part of the SDG Global Indicator Framework adopted by UN General Assembly in July 2017 (see A/RES/71/313).

WIEWS document repository of relevant PGRFA publications by FAO, including policy and technical guidelines, standards as well as periodic assessments on the status of these resources.

Domestic Animal Diversity Information System

The Domestic Animal Diversity Information System (DAD-IS) is a communication and information tool for the management of animal genetic resources for food and agriculture. It aims at assisting countries in the implementation of the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources.

DAD-IS provides access to searchable databases of breed-related information and photos and links to other online resources on livestock diversity. Furthermore, DAD-IS provides users with contact information of all National Coordinators for the Management of Animal Genetic Resources. DAD-IS provides a tool you to analyse the diversity of livestock breeds on national, regional and global levels including the status of breeds regarding their risk of extinction.
