Agroecology, key to transforming food and agricultural systems

14/12/2019

On 14th December, the 11th China Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Conference was held in Zhaoqing, Guangdong Province. More than 800 participants participated and shared their opinions on agroecology and rural revitalization.

Agroecology is key to transforming our food and agricultural systems. Growing scientific evidence and local experiences have already demonstrated how agroecology facilitates and contributes to transition to food and agricultural systems that are environmentally sustainable, economically fair, viable and socially equitable.

Scaling up agroecology requires innovations in policies, rural institutions and partnerships, as well as in the production, processing, marketing and consumption of nutritious food, leading to sustainability and equity throughout the entire food and agricultural system.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is fully committed to green and sustainable agriculture development. In addition to regular programmes and normative interventions in the area of sustainable food production and climate resilient agriculture, FAO in China has been actively promoting innovation through its Ag-LabCx, providing support in addressing key bottlenecks related to agriculture development, connectivity gaps and food loss and waste in China.

Vincent Martin, FAO Representative in China and DPR Korea stressed that “we look forward to continuing working with all stakeholders to support agroecological development not only in China, but also with other countries under the framework of South-South and Triangular Cooperation and the Belt and Road Initiative.”

The conference was hosted by the Rural Development Centre of Renmin University of China and the China CSA Alliance, and was organized by the People's Government of Dinghu District of Zhaoqing.
