UN Climate Change talks in Bonn, Germany - 2013

Come and hear from FAO and partners about ways to increase productivity, adapt to climate change, build resilience, and reduce GHG emissions from agricultural sectors, including forestry and fisheries. Examples will cover different technologies, practices, planning, policies and investment options that are available for transforming landscapes and food systems.

The panel will focus on synergies between adaptation and mitigation at country level around the following questions:

  • What adaptation measures, with mitigation co-benefits, are being used to build a more resilient and lower emission agriculture for food security and development at different scales?
  • What are the barriers to adoption/scaling-up of the above measures at country level and how could they be overcome?
  • What enabling measures at the international level could support national action on synergistic agricultural adaptation and mitigation?

Current state of agriculture and mitigation: NAMAs, quantifying emissions and links to adaptation

18:30 - 20:00 Rail (MoT)

Progress in agricultural climate change mitigation requires a reframing whereby development and adaptation priorities drive mitigation options. New global assessments indicate the opportunities for linking mitigation to development agendas and the priorities for action.

ENBOTS coverage of the side event

8 June 2013

Learning for a post-2020 UNFCCC framework using national mitigation actions for peatlands as pilots

13:15-14:45 Wind (MoE)

Drained peatlands cover 0.3% of the land, but produce 6% of the global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Current UNFCCC rules largely ignore these emissions. The side event will discuss how peatland emission mitigation actions can inform negotiations on addressing land use in the post-2020 framework.
