Adaptation and mitigation

Unless action is taken now to make agriculture more sustainable, productive and resilient, climate change impacts will seriously compromise food production in countries and regions that are already highly food-insecure.

Adaptation and mitigation play a prominent role in FAO’s Strategic Programmes as outlined in its Strategy. The collaborative efforts within FAO programmes increases support helping countries adapt to climate change. For example, increasing the resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises, shares significant common concerns related to climate change adaptation with efforts to make agriculture, forestry and fisheries more productive and sustainable. Promoting good adaptation and mitigation practices is also related to efficient water and energy use and including renewable energy in value chains.

Adaptation

The vital response to the adverse effects of climate and the preparation for future impacts. FAO is working with member nations, their farmers, academia, civil society and the private sector to improve ways to adapt to the effects of, climate change in the agriculture sectors.

FAO supports countries to integrate a gender perspective in their National Adaptation Plans and in the implementation of their NDCs. FAO also advocates for increased investment and works to strengthen national institutional capacity to deliver on adaptation and mitigation.  Adaptation is a large component of the Paris Agreement, which stresses the need to monitor and learn from adaptation actions and recommends periodic stocktaking of overall progress.

Human interventions to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases by sources or to enhance their removal from the atmosphere by “sinks” (“sink” refers to forests, vegetation or soils that can reabsorb Carbon dioxide CO2). CO2 is the largest contributing gas to the greenhouse effect. In the 200 years since 1800, levels of carbon dioxide have risen by over 30%.

FAO's Mitigation of Climate Change in Agriculture (MICCA) programme works on the ground and with partners to:

  • Monitor and assess greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the mitigation potential in agriculture. 
  • Develop the capacity of stakeholders working on national GHG inventories and farmers using climate-smart agriculture practices.
  • Give guidance on climate change mitigation & adaptation options, including for peatlands and organic soils.
