Climate Action Enhancement Package

The FAO project “Country support to the enhancement of the Nationally Determined Contributions in the AFOLU sector” was launched in response to countries’ technical requests. It aims to help them reach their climate ambitions through the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) revision process, under the Climate Action Enhancement Package (CAEP) launched by the NDC Partnership.

As NDCs reflect country-specific ambitions for domestic emission reductions and priorities to adapt to the impacts of climate change, this project responds directly to countries’ priorities as identified by the Governments. The project considers different stages of the NDC process (development, implementation, progress tracking and revision), as well as national circumstances and capabilities, and is being implemented at country level through FAO decentralized offices and in close collaboration with government counterparts and other partners. The geographical coverage of the action spans four global regions and 21 countries, with a particular focus on vulnerable countries, such as landlocked and least developed  countries, small island developing states and others included in FAOs  Hand in Hand Initiative the priority list:

The project’s main components are:

  • Support the definition and framework of NDC implementation, including NDC roadmaps, cost-benefit analysis and stakeholder engagement activities.
  • Strengthen countries’ transparency and their ability to measure, report and verify emissions, and to monitor and evaluate adaptation actions in the AFOLU sector in accordance with the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF).
  • Support the development of specific mitigation and adaptation strategies to be included in the new round of NDCs.

The timeframe for completion is June 2021, to ensure that all countries receive the necessary support to revise and enhance their commitments in line with the broader climate change agenda and timeline and in preparation for COP26.

The project is funded through the Technical Assistance Fund of the NDC Partnership, hosted by the World Resources Institute (WRI), with USD 2 911 780. These resources are complemented by funds mobilized by FAO to support the work.
